Partner and I are interested in hiking in Vermont around the Dec 28th to Jan 1st - ish time of this year. We're fairly experienced hikers/backpackers and have done some winter overnight tent hikes with temp drops below freezing. Mostly looking for a base cabin or area with a couple different hikes/activities to try out, don't really plan on tenting. I like a challenging hike but she's okay with most things with a preference for less intense. We're living in Baltimore right now so not super familiar with the area. Any recommendations?

For what it's worth, the like, backcountry cabins say from the Green Mountain Club get scooped up immediately on their reservation system. So, plan for winter 23-24 for that kind of experience.

Probably you should find an Airbnb that fits your criteria and planning on taking a car to the trailhead.

You can probably find rentals that are like "cabin camping" though. Holiday weeks do get busy up here, though.

Remember, conditions can be life threatening during alpine travel in The Greens, and especially in the winter. Be prepared, and carry spikes and maybe be prepared with snowshoes (along with all the other stuff, lamps, dry layers, emergency bivvy, etc etc) New years is a crapshoot for snow pack levels.

Camel's Hump is a pretty typical winter objective. Plan on a full day, but it's a really cool objective that's an achievable challenge.

Signed,

Some smelly telemark skier that wishes he had better winter hiking objectives for you.

The Stephenson Trail in Little River State Park (Waterbury) is great year around. Not super hard, goes through a ghost town, and water comes in from all over the place to feed the river. If you like cross country skiing, check out Mt. Elmore.

The Clarendon Gorge in Shrewsbury on the AT is a can't miss. Even if you don't hike there, the suspended bridge is right off - and I mean right off - Route 103, about 10 minutes from Rutland. If you want to stay at a super cool hiker hotel, I recommend the Inn at Long Trail (best Guinness in VT). Deer's Leap is right there and you can get a great view with a short hike.
