Schooling Putin in Ukraine is a LOT cheaper than confronting him in the Arctic, which is his ultimate goal.

Russia has 40 icebreakers while the US has one that is over 40 years old, so patrolling/protection of our Arctic interests is limited. The Arctic has vast untapped resources that Russia wants to claim.
