Vertmont = Green Mountain

birthbutbackwards t1_ite2kz5 wrote

It's actually bottled in Denmark and "Vertmont" is a Danish brand of Canada made maple syrup. That's why it says "stats kontrolleret økologisk", it means government controlled ecological, in the bottom. Everything claiming to be ecological has to go through government in Denmark, like everything else really.

They sell it all over Europe. Their website descriptions point out that Vertmont means green mountain and mentions that the best maple syrup comes from Vermont and the North Eastern regions of Canada.

I'm a Dane and I live in single-t Vermont

I just booked a plant ticket to Copenhagen so I can tell people I’m from Vermont…with a single T

Twist: it's olive oil.

I mean Vermont is a French name, so perhaps conflating it with Canada isn’t so unreasonable. The changed spelling is curious though 😁

Vert is basically up and green in French. Northern green mont. Vert mont.

No-Tomorrow1576 t1_iteh4g5 wrote

It originally was Vert Mont then the T was dropped and the other two words were put together to make it “Vermont” I learned this in teaching my kids about Vermont from homeschooling

*edit to fix “Month”

aelius_aristides t1_iteiwdt wrote

Dropping the T seems quite natural, the name rolls of the tongue better without it. Interesting!

3

Emerald_196 t1_itf2g1q wrote

Also you don't pronounce the T in Vert Mont. So by default it sounds like Very Mont, or Vermont.

aelius_aristides t1_itgfu8y wrote

Well French speakers don’t ofc, but obviously English colonists using the name did pronounce the T, or they wouldn’t have reason to drop it. I would think anyway.

This makes me feel a few things. Most happy, except the Vertmont maple coming from Canada.

Yes, it's incredible our little state somehow has a stronger brand internationally than Quebec, or maybe even Canada? That can't be true, but why don't they play up Canada's brand and good will? I've seen a very similar label in a normal grocery store in Sweden. We're kind of getting screwed here, but that they wanted to use our reputation is flattering!

halfar t1_itdlb8n wrote

they're using our brand to sell the third-rate cartel shit. pretty straight-forward.

Japanese Vermont curry, though? That might take an afternoon or two to unpack.

Salty_Charlemagne t1_itdnwaw wrote

Wait, is there really a maple syrup cartel?

1

meposet t1_ite7uie wrote

There is a chicken cartel as well.

stiff_mitten t1_itdpwf3 wrote

This brand pops up in the UK as well

Also, that’s a “red maple” leaf not a sugar maple leaf

Eternally65 t1_ite1amq wrote

I'd wonder if it is really fake maple syrup as well.

Reminds me of Petchow brand rat poison.

I think a lot of VT maple syrup is processed/ packaged in Canada

Outrageous-Outside61 t1_ito5vgs wrote

Fuck Canada. I know they’re all nice and shit, but they’re milk and maple cartels fuck Vermont pretty rudely. At least give us a reach around…

Says “Vertmont Maple Syrup” but made in Canada!! How is that Vermont anything?

ARealVermontar t1_itejqof wrote

It doesn't say Vermont. Read it again, carefully.

No-Tomorrow1576 t1_itejuhk wrote

I know exactly what it says, thank you..

1

ARealVermontar t1_itelfl4 wrote

Okay, your comment originally said it said Vermont maple syrup. Maybe it got autocorrected.

1

No-Tomorrow1576 t1_itelkev wrote

Do you know what “Vertmont” means?

−1

ARealVermontar t1_itemy1r wrote

Of course I do, but your original comment said it was labeled Vermont maple syrup. Since your edit I think the confusion is all cleared up now!

thrownawayvtvt t1_itdrbjl wrote

"product of Canada" Meaning it was bottled in Vermont with Canadian syrup. So not real Vermont syrup. And yes there is a difference.
