Hello, i'm planning a week end trip in Mt Mansfield for late October and was wondering if a reservation is required in order to set up a shelter in tent sites on the trails as shown on the Alltrails app for example ? What if the designated sites are already crowded for example ? Is wild camping allowed on trail ? Im fairly new to this, any recommandations ?

Thanks in advance

End of October is going to be pretty chilly. Mansfield had 2-3 inches of snow this past weekend and most of the ski resorts will be open for the season making snow. I hope you are prepared for winter camping. It requires different gear and protections for basic safety.

A lot of shelters and other sites will be pre-booked and not much may be available.

Im always in the opinion of. If you have to ask these basic questions about trail etiquette. You should probably go in the summer a few times first until you are comfortable.

Well sure, its always a good thing to get familiar with the area first but i dont get to go to Vermont very often so, appreciate your concern anyway

Which shelters? I’m not familiar with ones around Mansfield but ones on the LT near sugarbush mad river etc. I doubt would be occupied end of October. There’s just not all that many people camping in the cold.

Its going to be cold and icy af. Get some experience backpacking in the summer. Get some experience hiking in the winter. Then do this. Dont put rescue volunteers lives at risk.

Shelters and tent sites are first come, first serve.

Camping off trail is not allowed.

Is it limited to one tent per site ? So there is no way to know if you can spend the night there then ?

Two thoughts for you.

  1. Contact Underhill State Park to see if staying there is an option 802.899.3022 - their season runs through 10/15 but after-season accomodations can still be made with the ranger if made in advance.
  2. Visit this website and scroll to bottom for PDF maps specific to Primitive Camping in Mount Mansfield: https://vtstateparks.com/camping.html#remoteCamping

Well i have gear for below freezing temps only so i think i'll be fine since i dont plan on setting camp above tree line, is there a main ressource for booking camp sites ? Also do you have any recommandations on other trails that might be interesting ?

Treeline or not. Temp drops about 5 degrees per 1k feet. If you dont know the trails well. And don't have experience backpacking I would really reconsider. Its the time of year when they keep having to rescue people because they get themselves up there and then its icy af.

Pack some foil emergency blankets, it’s going to be colder than you anticipate. You’d be amazed how much good a single foil blanket can do inside your sleeping bag even if it’s just around your legs or balled up around your feet.
