Hi.

I'm a professional caretaker with a full-time live-in special needs client. I am seeking a safe, quality space for us, as well as a future client I will be gaining in the household.

I'm an early to bed, early to rise, non-partying middle-aged man with no time for nonsense.

While I would prefer an actual home, I'm not overly picky regarding the spot.

Ultimately, a three-bedroom would be great. Saying that, a two bedroom plus a space that could be used as a bedding area would also be great.

I know the different outlets for looking, but I'm having so little luck with even so much as a reply. So far, in most cases, I can see that people haven't even read the messages I've sent regarding their ad.

It's so disheartening. Living in the Burlington Metro area is not particularly important. The only thing important to me is living in Chittenden County.

I'd like rent to be around 1600ish. I know.

Come back to reality, Crazypantses

Also, landlords that aren't garbage humans would be super awesome.

If you know an owner, or you know someone who knows someone.

I've heard word of mouth is the best way.

Thank you for your time and help.

M

Good luck. 3 bedroom in Chittenden for 1600 is going to be hard to find without some form of subsidization.

Hmmm. If you enjoy caretaking your best bet would be contacting Homeshare Vermont. They connect people to homeowners who will share their homes on exchange for some help with appts and errands and chores.

Seeing that you already care for someone your best option would be to find an apt through them as people with disabilities are often given special preference. I’d call all of the housing partnerships in your driving range

Thank you very, very much.

Two and a half years ago I never would have imagined such a phenomenal career, but it's been incredibly rewarding.

I love what I do, and even though it has deep challenges, I still love it.

Thank you again.

As another member said, Champlain Housing Trust is a great resource. Have you considered looking just outside of Chittenden County? Places like Georgia, Fairfax, South Hero, Grand Isle (where I live) and even Ferrisburgh are all within 30-40 minutes of Burlington and considerably less expensive.

I know the rental market it crazy right now and the sales market is still rough too. I'm a Realtor who specializes in first-time buyers and buyers with borderline opportunities. Happy to help if you want to try that route. I work with some of the best (and most creative) local lenders in the state.

Good Luck!

Thank you! I sort of have to stay local because of my Social Services employer, but I'm not 100% against other possibilities.

I very well may message you!

Appreciate it greatly.

Just chiming in with whatever info I can, the Burlington metro area includes the entirety of Chittenden county and beyond. I’m fairly certain all of Franklin and Grand Isle counties are included in it. Beyond those, lots of people live in Lamoille, Washington, and Addison counties and work in Burlington/Chittenden County.

Chittenden is where the jobs are, but it’s also where the affordable housing isn’t. I’m almost certain you can’t find what you’re looking for in Chittenden county. But you may be able to if you expand the search to whatever you consider an acceptable driving time and distance from Burlington. Granted I still don’t really think it’s likely to find something, but it’s less impossible at least.

Best of luck and hoping you find what you’re looking for and something that meets your needs.

OP may need to reside within Chittenden County due to where the client(s)/residents receive services (if they do).

But remember everyone, there is plenty of housing for more COVID transplants! We need to get this shit under control. Montpelier needs to do something, and we need to keep people out until then.

We have gained some 8-10k residents in 2 years. As you are finding there is nowhere to put people. I mean I guess we can just board everyone at the hotels like we have been since Covid started, but we have almost 1000 people in state funded hotel housing right now, with no permanent residence, and every day there are more people coming here because we have gay rights, and abortion rights and it’s pretty, and we are liberals. I wish everyone in the country could live here, but until Montpelier fixes the housing crisis (bans ABnB, eminent domains unoccupied investment/2nd homes), and finds a way to cap predatory rental rates, we CAN’T have more people showing up adding to the housing shortage. You probably had no idea what you were getting into when you moved here, and most don’t, then they find themselves in this spot, needing a place to live but everything is out of the budget, or not being able to afford heating fuel because they are paying above their means in rent/mtg.

Intent isn’t to be an asshole, it’s to state the honest truth. We have a crisis. We need get through the line of people already waiting before we add more.

Just how many people do you want to see here? Another thousand? Ten thousand?

So you're not only only searching for a needle in a haystack, but you want the needle to be gold and encrusted with diamonds as well

Exactly.

That is exactly why I said everything MUST be a certain way, and not a general hope.

Thank you for your input.
