I have been using Wells Fargo as a bank for almost my entire life, and have decided that due to proximity issues, (along with other issues involving Wells Fargo), I should set up a bank account at one of the local credit unions. I was wondering if I could get some insight into some of the credit unions here in VT. I am also based in Chittenden County.

New England Federal Credit Union is great. Highly recommend them.

Call up Vermont Federal Credit Union. Been with them for five years- quite happy. The experience is as a bank should be- but you know you’re keeping your money in the community. They’ll be better able to answer your questions.

I use VT Federal Credit Union for my money, Reward checking pays me 2% interest if I use my debit card 12 times a month and have direct deposit. I use NEFCU for my mortgage and car loan, their rates were the best when I was shopping for a home and a car even when compared to national companies and they service locally. I have absolutely no complaints about either one, all of my banking is done virtually in their apps aside from when I actually opened the accounts/got loans.

I am with Vermont Federal Credit Union, very happy with them, great rates on vehicle loans. I have two loans from them, very easy to apply and amazing customer service.

If you use apps primarily for your banking interface then ask them to show you the app before you decide on which credit union.

The app that NEFCU uses for their credit card is total junk. Avoid.

What don't you like? I have had no issues with it. I don't belong to any other banks so I can't compare.

It's a poorly designed web app that looks like it's from 2008.

It eats bandwidth like crazy, don't even try using it if you are on restricted mobile bandwidth.

The scaling is all out of whack. Looks fine on an iPad, unusable on a phone.

It takes days to show transactions that show up much faster on the desktop site.

Even their own internal employees have voiced their hatred of the app to me.

Compared to the app it replaced it slid back a decade in usability.

I just did this a few months ago after Wells Fargo pulled an insane stunt on me. The day my family went on vacation they froze my account for two weeks. I spent my entire vacation begging, pleading, and fighting Wells Fargo. Zero help and zero sympathy from them. I closed all my accounts and my credit card with them (they couldn't have cared less) and went to Key Bank. Not a credit union, but I feel your Wells Fargo pain. There is something deeply wrong with that company.

I used to have HFCU (heritage). They switched me to a “premium” checking account without my knowledge. Charged me $2.95 per month for it. Very antiquated practices and technology. Most banks did away with overdraft fees years ago, and you’d think a mission driven credit union would have as well, but nope. They don’t support instant transfers from things like Venmo or Cash App, even though I was paying $2.95 per month just to have a checking account! There were a few random days every year where my debt card just didn’t work. I’d call them and it’d be some sort of “issue” they were having causing outages. Every 6 months or so, their website would be down on a Saturday for “scheduled maintenance”. Very inconvenient if you wanted to literally just check your balance.

I use a big nationally known bank now. No random outages. No overdraft fees. Free checking account. Instant transfers supported.

Wish I could say my credit union experience was better.
