Anyone know what letter the DMV is currently issuing, is it still in the "K"s?

Also, anyone know what the current DMV turnaround time is for mailed-in new registration applications?

Has anyone else noticed there are no I, J, O and Z on vermont license plates? I get the I and O, could be confused with 1 and 0 - but why J and Z?! Someone must have the answer.

I registered 2 cars earlier this year and got hit with "KFC" on both. I hate it.

I asked a friend at the DMV and they confirmed the J and I look too similar from a distance to a 1 on the generic plates, as does Z and 2.

All letters of the alphabet are available for custom plates however.

There also are no “Q” because it can be confused with zero. The “Z” is not used because in the computer records the letter Z is used to represent disabled plates. So if you see a disabled plate that shows handicap emblem followed by 1234 that plate is in computer records as Z1234.

You can refuse a plate. You do not need to provide any reason. If asked for a reason you can just say it’s personal. Or you can say the letter combination is offensive or reminds you a traumatic event in your life. Or the number combination is bad luck in your “fill in the blank” (culture, religion, home country). Happens all the the time and is perfectly acceptable.

Oh nice, thanks for this info. Honestly, in the moment I would have probably just went with it even if I knew this. I sort of chuckled about it at the time, but after seeing it every day for a number of months now it just annoys me 🤷‍♂️🤣

A combination of letters, numbers or spaces may be used.

No more than two (2) numbers are allowed in combination with letters.
The Department considers “O” to be a number (zero).
Dots, dashes or other special characters or symbols cannot be used.
The plate cannot begin with the letter “Z”.
A single letter plate is acceptable; however, the letter cannot be an “I”, “J”, “O” or “Z”.

Running through the alphabet. Your first letter is your identifier.
