Recommendations for best fish and chips in VT. We took a little time off this week and instead of continuing to pick up branches from the storm, we’re on a hunt for the best fish and chips in the state. Yup, we’ll drive - just to get out a bit. Toss your thoughts on over and we’ll check it out! Thanks.

Elliot Street Fish, Chips, & More in Brattleboro. Really good falafel as well and homemade tartar sauce!

I only ate there once, on a gallery walk evening, because I had heard these great reviews. The oil was truly old and then I looked into the kitchen. A door was open and there were flies all over. Not going back. Maybe the Falafel is better than the fish and chips we had but still wouldn't be enough to return.

Hopefully it was just a bad day for them. We all have them.

Yes on a hot day a tired staff could leave the doors and windows open I get that. I should have added that the dirt crusted ~1/4" thick on the oily shelves and fans meant it was a long-standing issue. My second thought was are there no restaurant inspectors or health department in Brattleboro?! Dutton's Farm Stand in Newfane is another place I avoid for the same reason.

Thanks, will check it out!

I adore Fish and Chip. My mom was British and she preferred Union Jacks or Fish and Chip, but Fish and Chip were the only place offering mushy peas with your fish and chips, so they got the nod. Plus, the ladies there are top-notch.

Mushy peas, I’ll try them for the first time in honor of your mom. Thanks.

Thank you. It would have made her day to know someone was going to give them a try. I love them, but they are an acquired taste. She would have told you that they're best eaten after splashing a little malt vinegar over them. She had Alzheimer's and the way the ladies at Fish and Chip were always so warm and welcoming, even when time and time again she acted as if she'd never been there before... Brings tears to the eye.

Google says it’s temporarily closed? But their site doesn’t seem to indicate it’s closed? Any idea if The Fish and Chip is open?

I had takeout from them last week. Call them up

Awesome! Good to know they’re open. Will be grabbing fish and chips there soon.

The fish and chip is/was closed for the holidays like until Jan 2nd I think. Their fish is amazing. Union jacks also. And then there is Ray’s in Essex.

I was also there in person last week - it was great. I was very impressed with the food. The ambiance isn’t great, it’s pretty basic. But the fish was good, as was the Greek food!

Not in VT, but the Man of Kent Tavern over towards Hoosick was a must visit whenever I was in the area. Have an Auld Speckled Hen to wash it down!

Been there many times. I cannot say enough about the food and atmosphere. It’s sort of a hooligan sports pub but there is always a happy group of people. Also love the beer menu they have from all over the world.

aqhamills OP t1_j24eyxk wrote

It’s definitely on the list for a day trip. As EPL and hockey fans we love the hooligan sports bunch 😆

Sadly, I think the Man of Kent, aka the guy who opened it, is no longer there serving pints, he's gotta be pushing late 80's at this point. He was a hoot to talk to, truly a good publican. Regardless, it is a fine spot for a beer, some cheer, a bit of grub, and a lot of pub.

Cornerstone in Barre has really good fish and chips. I haven't tried the dish at many places in VT, but I was super happy with theirs.

if you're in town, visit Aranda's for some good empanadas too. I went recently based on a reddit recommendation, and they're _good_.

heads up, Cornerstone's only open like 4 days/week or something

the second best fish and chips in town is mulligan's. they're also pretty good - it's funny, because just the other day I was thinking how lucky I was to have 2 good fish-and-chips spots nearby.

statuek t1_j21obhl wrote

the fries at cornerstone were just okay. great fries at mulligans. I'd substitute to some other side at cornerstone. good bar, too. (lighting, staff, table/chair ratio, etc.)
