I’m a stay at home mom trying to get some exercise in and wanted to start ice skating again. I would have to bring my 6 month old with me skating if I went during the day and I would have to use a stroller. Would it ruin the ice? Would people think I was a jerk? There’s usually nobody at these rinks so I wouldn’t be a nuisance to anyone.

ETA: I’m talking about outdoor rinks the town sets up for the community to use.

Canadian mom of three hockey playing boys here. You go grlll. Up here we moms skate with strollers, chairs, anything. Like many Canadians, I spent time in the US, and fondly remember my days in the Northeast Kingdom. People there are resourceful, respect individuals and don't worry about what the rest of the world is doing. I am pretty sure you can gracefully glide around the rink, stroller and child, head held high. It will not ruin the ice. And as far as other things go, please stop worrying about what other people think. I'm pretty sure you and your kid are about to make some new good friends at the rink. And maybe you'll open up a whole new opportunity for other mothers. Wishing you all the best.

Hey that's awesome advice! I'm in the NEK. It's snowing pretty decent now. I'm older now but played hockey 🏒 for many years.

Kids learning to skate often use milk crates. I can't imagine that a stroller would be worse for the ice than that. I personally wouldn't think twice about it.

My kid was learning at school with a chair, I can’t imagine the wheels would be damaging at all

We just went to the Union ice rink in Woodstock. People use Walkers there with wheels to learn to skate so if those don’t do serious damage to the ice then the same would apply to a stroller. If there is anyone around from the town ask them otherwise I would just go ahead and use it after wiping the Wheels off first. If anyone objects (which I doubt they will unless you are zooming around knocking into people at high speed) then you can plead your case then or leave.

Thanks for the reply! There’s usually nobody at the rinks around so hopefully it wouldn’t be any sort of issue! I’ll be sure to wipe the wheels off.

An indoor place or outdoor place? If it’s outdoor there’s bound to be a little dirt on the surface anyway. If it’s indoor just ask (or just do it and stop if someone tells you to stop)

mmac1011 OP t1_j6f1nid wrote

They’re outdoor rinks. I’m thinking that there would be dirt but from other people’s comments I should wipe the wheels off first which wouldn’t be a big deal for me to do!

MizLucinda t1_j6f1yjn wrote

Good point on wiping the wheels. I was thinking outdoor might be a more likely to have some grit than indoors so a little wheel grit might now be a huge issue outside.

Not at all and can't imagine anyone even saying anything. I've seen mothers pulling sleds at the ice rink also.

People use chairs, I would think a stroller would be okay. Make sure little one is securely fastened in case of a fall.

Oh yes of course! It’s a stroller with a harness like a car seat.

Ask before you do that?

I’m not sure who exactly I would ask? Someone at the town office? I don’t know who maintains the ice

Easier to ask forgiveness than beg permission 😌 go skate and have fun with the little one.

Parks and rec would be who to ask but I don’t think you should ask. Then they have to check if it’s okay which probably no one knows so it would be a hassle to figure out and they put the pond there because they want people to use it, so just go ahead and use it! Have fun

There is always someone there at the rink watching what's going on?

Hillman314 t1_j6fs591 wrote

No. Strollers are usually plastic or rubber tires. It won’t hurt ice. People use chairs, milk crates and metal stands for support when learning.

Hint: The only way to go forward is to step side to side, pushing sideways with the blade. Otherwise there’s no traction. Forward is just the average of going side to side. Good luck.

I would think it strage at first but wouldn't balk at it. I think as long as you clear it with the rink staff, you're good to go.

Just be prepared for some people to be worried about it if you don't look like a very competent skater. I was with a parent/stroller/kid combo and everything was fine until the kid (who couldn't skate) started using the stroller (with a baby in it) as a learning device to lean on. Everything was fine and the stroller didn't tip over, but it sure looked like it was going to.

Sometimes it's easier to get forgiveness, than permission. I can't imagine that it'd be a problem. And if you just did it, I bet that no one would have a problem. But if you ask.... then they'll have time to think about it, and then it'll become a problem, even if it isn't.

I upvoted, because I’m assuming you meant “no” as a direct answer to ops question, and the “?” was to mean “why is this even questionable”. Not sure why you are catching downvotes, unless that’s not what you meant.

While she’s at it don’t don’t walk the stroller on the sidewalk, a car could crash into them. Shouldn’t take the baby for walks on a trail either, a wild animal could attack.

People who teach their little kids to ski or ride a bike are just asking for them to die too. Nowhere is safe, never let your children leave the house.

I’m praying for that sweet innocent child, it never stood a chance at life. I’m calling CPS

lazylady64 t1_j6eunm3 wrote

You really should call. Every time she takes the baby outside, he's in danger from all that fresh air. I mean, what if he chokes!?

Bradcopter t1_j6flq3r wrote

But inside there could be a fatal buildup of carbon monoxide with no notice. What if the detectors break!? I'm calling CPS.

I am using common sense? I know how to safely strap my child in the stroller and I also know how to ice skate. I wouldn’t be speed skating or dangerously skating with the child. I’m pretty sure biking with a child strapped onto a bike is more dangerous than what I would be doing.
