favorite weekend trips away from VT?

Hi, I live in the NEK and trying to think of somewhere new to go when I have a few days off in early April. Somewhere besides Boston, Maine, or Montreal. What are your favorite places to travel that are driveable from northern VT? Any suggestions that would be decent to travel in mud season? thanks in advance !

April in VT is great—first blush of spring, maple smoke in the air, few bugs, empty roads! Mud? Y’can deal. My fave season. Why go anywhere?

That was TSE’s take. If you know about it ahead, adjust expectations, get to know yr neighbors, watch the earth waking up…then it’s joy. But for you, maybe a jaunt to olde Quebec would suffice.

Honestly I know you said driveable, but check out cheap flights. I’ve done some awesome 3-4 day trips for dirt cheap. Skyscanner has always been my go to.

Ottawa is a lovely place to visit for a weekend. I've made 3 separate trips in the past 6 or 7 years. I've been twice in May and once in November. I can fully recommend the Canadian War Museum, Air and Space Museum, National Gallery of Canada, and Ottawa Senators NHL Hockey. Walking along the Ottawa River and along the Rideau Canal is lovely too.

I can also fully recommend Quebec City as well. Lovely shops, great restaurants, very scenic. Old town is very easy to walk around.

New Haven, CT has lots of arts, culture, dining, cool architecture, great live music scene. Just made NYT “best places to visit in 2023 list”. The casinos in eastern CT (Mohegan, Foxwoods) are fun. In the summer, RI shoreline is lovely, highly recommend taking the ferry to Block Island and renting some bikes or scooters (limited cars on the island). Providence is another cool small city, with dining, arts, music, etc.

Kamouraska, just north of Québec City, is beautiful! As is the Charlevoix region :) if you don’t mind driving a bit further, the Gaspésie region is stunning! Or drive over to Nova Scotia - I love Cape Breton but there are so many gems all over the province.

Lakes region in central NH is beautiful. There are tons of cool museums and food joints, plus if its late april you may be able to ride the Mount Washington on lake Winniepausaukee. (Not sure when she comes out of dry dock, though)
