When I was a kid, my dad and I were driving in the California desert heading to the Palomar observatory. On an empty highway completely without warning our car was blasted by a low flying F-16 that had snuck up on us from behind. I was instantly under the dashboard and my dad was shrunk in his chair shouting expletives (being a commercial pilot he was super pissed) It was the biggest "jump scare" I've ever experienced.

I was driving one evening near London Heathrow airport, when Concorde took off with afterburners in full flame right above me. My reaction was just the same as your Dad's...and biggest jump scare I've ever experienced too.

I can't imagine the noise of those engines. The sound of the jet was incredible. I've experienced "sneak up" flybys at airshows but this was that x1000

Got hit with a killer "sneak-up" flyover from a distant air show. We were at a pier on a beach looking at the air show going on miles away across the water. The planes would come out over the lake, but never closer than maybe a half-mile or so. Suddenly a jet comes from the land side of our view (behind us) and the sound blasted us all at once. Entire pier of people were jump-scared by that one.

I worked near Heathrow, and every day you could hear the amazing sound as Concorde took off at about 11.00am. The engine roar would fade, and all that was left was the wailing of car alarms, from cars parked nearby. The raw power of that plane was incredible.

Where I grew up, I used to live under the flight path near Heathrow. Around 6pm everyday it was deafening, but you got used to it. Never stopped being amazing.

Look up the new "Boom" by Overture. Hoping we see them in the skies by 2030.

They're going to need an engine first. They literally don't have one.

It's literally just a model right now. Usually takes a bit longer than that to develop an aircraft, test parts, get manufacturing set up, get it approved/qualified by the FAA, then sell it. Not to mention how many companies and "idea" planes pop up already.

Unfortunately, without an engine or half-way working prototype, they haven't really even taken the first steps in development, at least not the challenging ones. If they already had made progress, I'd say they have a chance, but it's still way too early to have any hope.

Dad was in the RAF and we lived on various bases my entire childhood.

In that entire time nothing was as loud as watching a Vulcan flypast at an airshow in the mid-70's. I remember a can of Coke resting on top of the car being shuffled across the roof as it flew by.

I'm envious of you. I never saw a Vulcan, but fell in love with them when I saw a documentary about how Vulcans were used in the bombing of the Falkland Islands. So audacious to use moth-balled aircraft for one last mission, to fly half-way round the world as a reminder that even mainland South America could be targeted if needed. Old technology that still carried an unexpected punch.

If you've not seen it, highly recommend the following documentary about the story of Vulcans going to war. https://youtu.be/D3ZdOo9dtC8

Not a plane but occasionally helicopters will buzz 1WTC in NYC and it’s pretty nuts. They’ll be flying within what looks like 100’ and you can clearly everyone inside. Close enough to hear the windows shake. And not just once but for a few laps.

It’s always military (blackhawks) or coast guard (also blackhawks)

If I may interrupt with a useless bit of information:

Black Hawk - Army

Seahawk - Navy

Pave Hawk - Air Force

Jayhawk - Coast Guard

Your point is nonetheless diminished, I merely meant to bring this useless bit of trivia to your and other readers attention. Carry on.

From one pedant to another: saying “your point is nonetheless diminished” implies that their point is diminished. Nonetheless means “however” or “despite anything to the contrary”. You could have said “Nonetheless, your point is undiminished.”

Ah yes, I did not realize my error. At least my point was undiminished!

What’s Space Force’s helicopter called?

Star Hawk.

In actuality, though, they would use the Pave Hawk if they had need of an S-70 based air frame.

Cheeto Hawk, in honor of the branch's infamously orange founder. He thought it sounded like Cheetah Hawk but fell asleep texting with cheeseburger grease on his tiny fingers.

I went to Pensacola for college, which is the home of the Blue Angels. You can often see them practicing from the beach. When they are going fast and heading straight towards you... you don't hear them until they are right on top of you or even past you. It's terrifying because they are super loud too. It's amazing how something that loud can be so sneaky.

It's really something seeing those birds in action. I pity anyone stuck in a trench with those guys circling above.
