I was talking about the phone experience. Which is identical whether it's a regular video or short. Both would be in portrait and require to press a button to read comments

The problem is that the rest of the platform is optimized for landscape. If I'm watching a YouTube video on my phone, it's in landscape mode.

Not arguing that, but you wouldn't read the comments while watching in landscape on your phone either since that's not even possible

I rarely read comments on my phone at all, but I do on desktop, which is also landscape. From my perspective, it's a long-form landscape experience, and the shorts simply suck.
