This interactive chart tracks the ratio of the Dow Jones Industrial Average to the price of gold. The number tells you how many ounces of gold it would take to buy the Dow on any given month. Previous cycle lows have been 1.94 ounces in February of 1933 and 1.29 ounces in January of 1980.

this chart tells you "how real is the value of the stock market" by comparing it to a very real resource with all kinds of practical and perceptual value.

the stock market, well...it's just a fancy casino

Right now its about 18 ounces for a dow jones share. This has happend multipule times in history. What this draws is a perfect picture of inflation. For example; in 1959 this was also the case, 18 ounces for 1 dow jones share. Then again in 1972, then 1997, then 2006, then 2017, then 2019, then 2021 and then this year.

For the record the price of a down jones share in 1959 was; around 6k 1972 was; around 7k 1997 was; around 7,5k 2006 was; around 11,5k 2017 was; around 22k 2019 was; around 26k 2021 was; around 34k

Now what this means, is that the true value of this particulair stock has not changed allot. Only the number of dollars has increased.

Hours of work for 20% down payment on a house. That’s the only metric that really matters and that metric has gone to shit since 1980.

You can turn the chart upside-down and still get the same readings

Is there a point in comparing pre- and post-fiat?

Real af. When we first came to the America we had 2 suitcases and 10K usd. We had to send back 4K because someone died suddenly. 15 years later, we have realized the American Dream. Now solid middle class. Work and save your money, invest and the returns are real. The loses to. You can buy actual things and luxuries with it, feed your family.

How do you know it’s real? It’s a piece of cotton paper but you save it and it’s still there. You give it to someone and they will give you things or their time energy and skill regardless of how you got that piece of paper. That’s as real as it gets.
