After a 6-year transformation of the 1928 building, National Zoo’s Bird House reopens on March 13. The exhibition highlights the journeys of migratory songbirds, waterfowl and shorebirds integral to North, Central, and South American ecosystems.

The original entrance was preserved and the exhibition built within the walls of the Zoo’s historic Bird House. The towering mosaic is made with polychrome concrete and is imbedded with glass and colored marbles. It was designed and fabricated by local artisan John Joseph Early.

In the illustration, a pair of barred owls, bronze turkeys and a shorebird walk the space in their best attires.

I’m a huge bird nerd and have been anxiously awaiting the Bird House to re-open. Your piece of art is incredible. I love the character that went into the birds. I hope this makes them seem more approachable for kids too. Birds are often not the most exciting to children while at the zoo, when there are lions and tigers to wide-eyed gaze at. I was a weird and wonderful kid who liked all the unique animals, so birds have always had a place and my heart and hope this new exhibit and your art opens up the varied species to so many others as well.

Thank you for the lovely words! I learned to appreciate birds when I volunteered at City Wild Life and their program Lights Out DC. Then I got my guides and everything, but I have been slow to pick them again. But now I have kids! Perhaps I could pass along that curiosity too :)

Are you going to make this into a print? I have a couple of your other prints. This one would be so rad!

Pretty pumped for this. When I occasionally wander in I always look at the huge under construction aviary net/dome up by the elephants (where the gate is on the bridge) and play the Jurassic Park song in my head.

Used to have an apartment across from the construction entrance and it was fun to imagine what they were up to in there :)
