After a 6-year transformation of the 1928 building, National Zoo’s Bird House reopens on March 13. The exhibition highlights the journeys of migratory songbirds, waterfowl and shorebirds integral to North, Central, and South American ecosystems.
The original entrance was preserved and the exhibition built within the walls of the Zoo’s historic Bird House. The towering mosaic is made with polychrome concrete and is imbedded with glass and colored marbles. It was designed and fabricated by local artisan John Joseph Early.
In the illustration, a pair of barred owls, bronze turkeys and a shorebird walk the space in their best attires.
