It's shaped like a football - something to do with the Washington Football Team

You, sir are correct! George Preston Marshall was friends with Conrad Hilton.

When Hilton built his new hotel in Washington, he had the ballroom, which was going to be the largest in the city, made in the shape of a football, so Marshall would move his annual Grid Iron dinner from the Shorham.

I believe it's acoustics. I know the Hall of President's and Green Room is behind the stage. The stage is mechanical, it drops down to the garage for storage and load in purposes. On the other side is all a kitchen. Holds up to 150 tables, has a second tier, near the kitchen. The lighting in the ceiling soffit can change to any color you want, And the food sucks. Other than that, I dunno.

Food's really good when I've gotten fed. You did a great job of describing the ballroom, however, you didn't answer the question.

Think of it from a top-down pov, as if you're looking at a set of blueprints.

The acoustics in this room are funky. The curved ceilings and walls give you a whisper room effect, so the back of house has to be careful, or their conversations will be overheard by people sitting in front of them. It also makes it a challenge for the audio lead, as the stage has very good acoustics, so it's easy to have the mics get overwhelmed.

It’s a squashed oval shape. Done to maximize floor space with no pillars blocking sight to the stage.

No, but it is a very good theatrical space.

I don’t remember ever hearing an inspiration for the shape in all the years I’ve had events there, so I’m curious to see what answer you are looking for.

(I’ve been at the POV of this photo many times.)

It’s one of the most famous ballrooms in the World. It hosts the annual White House Correspondents dinner, among many other high profile events.
