Hi! I just moved back into DC after briefly living in VA. While there, I bought a car and would like to register it in DC so I can get a resident parking pass. I totally understand what is required based on the DMV website but I’m confused about needing to bring the original title. I financed my car and I’m still making monthly payments so I don’t have the title. Has anyone else dealt with this?

You’ll have to email or fax the request form (the DMV will give it to you) to your title company. Your title company has to mail the original title to the DMV of your choice.

You will have to follow up with your title company to see where they’re at in the process & this could take over 60 days. DC temp tags last for 45 days!

Had PNC as my loan provider. And they used a third party company to handle those kind of title requests. There’s no great way to track it/ they ended up not doing it. I ended up paying the rest of my loan balance (luckily wasn’t too much left) to get my title. It was the worst.

Good luck!

You also need a DC license, if you don’t already have one.

Yeah this process really sucks. My company sent it to the Rhode Island dmv and then it shut down. I had to take a loan to pay that loan to force the company to get a new title from the original state since it was lost

Don’t forget to bring an original copy of the constitution

they make you bring or mail an original title to them... it took me about 6 months to get thru this process when we moved here trying to orchestrate a 3 way conversation between a totally inept southern state where the car was registered, toyota who held the title as we had a loan on it, and DC who had impossibly high standards. They gave me a temp parking pass during this time tho ;-)
