DC Library hosting far right story hour with Libs of TikTok, Jack Posobiec, and Kirk Cameron on 3/29

Heads up - It looks like the Cleveland Park library is either hosting or the meeting spot for a far right event sponsored by Brave Books this coming Wednesday. It's going to have white supremacist Jack Posobiec, the woman behind the Libs of TikTok anti-LGBT campaign, and several others.

They just want a bunch of people to show up protesting them and trying to get it cancelled so they can say “this is no different from what we want to do to trans people”

It is not a library event. A group reserved a meeting room for a book talk. Anyone can do this. It is not an endorsement from the library.

Please be aware that the library IS NOT ENDORSING NOR OTHERWISE INVOLVED OTHER THAN PROVIDING THE SPACE.

Due to the way the library offers its services, we can't turn down any public meetings so long as they abide by the rules and regulations as delineated on our website. Ergo the staff at Cleveland Park would be going against our mission of being open and available to everybody so long as they aren't indulging in hate speech or bringing out torches.

Your library rules state that partons are bannable for "Engaging in bullying as defined by the Youth Bullying Prevention Act of 2012, effective September 14, 2012 (D.C. Law 19-167; 59 DCR 7820)." https://www.dclibrary.org/behavior

When I look up that statute, it includes bullying race, gender identity, and sexual orientation. Libs of Tiktok and Jack Posobiec bully for these on a daily basis. By your own rules, should they not be barred from DCPL with a category 3 violation for 1 month?

By our rules, they'd have to do it on our premises in order to bar them for this behavior.

Don't get me wrong, I want nothing more than for Kirk Cameron to keep his clown car packed up and detour around DC, but I do want people to understand that the staff at the library have our hands tied when it comes to this.

It would take a decision from high-up administration, as in at the level of the Director, for us to turn them away, and would likely require the media relations people to coordinate with the Mayor's office to prepare for the tizzy conservatives would throw over it.

It would be terrible if the parking lots were completely full prior to the time that they would need to arrive and set up, encouraging them. Only to find the Library deserted of patrons.

Yes, and I get that. But this isn’t just like normal political speech so every side should get access. This is people who do blatant hate speech and the library should not give a forum for that.

We don't have the ability to refuse Kirk Cameron use of the space so long as he abides by library rules. So long as he is just doing a public reading from his book and doesn't start to actively proselytize while on the building campus our hands are tied.

Lucky for me I don't work at Cleveland Park and as such won't have to deal with this awful meeting, but I feel for the staff who do.
