There's a vacant house across the alley from us with a long grassy back yard (no fence) that only gets mowed when we file a rat complaint with 311. I really want to plant a saucer magnolia in their yard so I can see it from my home office, lol.

You be careful with that now, we don’t want to get into asymmetric gardening here

I completely agree and add that I lived here for like 5 years before I realized that the Japanese magnolias are not in fact cherry blossoms

One thing that never ceases to amuse me: throngs of tourists taking photos of the magnolias over by the Archives, thinking they've found the cherry blossoms.

We’ve actually been somewhat blessed by the seasonably cold weather, which is preserving and extending the magnolias while holding off the cherries

Wow where is this spot in the photo? Any recommendations on where to go see magnolias?

This photo in particular looks to be by the Smithsonian Castle, in particular the Moongate garden

The Haupt Garden (of which the Moongate Garden is one segment) behind the Castle is the prime location in DC.

What other areas have the best cherry blossom/magnolia views outside of the tidal basin/haines point/arboretum?

Cherry blossoms have been blooming for several weeks now, no?

You've likely been seeing plum trees blooming. They look similar.

cattache t1_jbpq753 wrote

Bless your heart. They’ve been blooming for the past two weeks in the National Arboretum.

isahayajoe t1_jbrebvc wrote

If they’ve been blooming for two weeks they aren’t cherries

We’re talking about magnolias, not cherries.
