I know DC has its issues, but didn't expect it to rank that low on the list.
I'm sure most people take these lists with a grain of salt, but still interesting to see.

Never lived anywhere like DC. Seems resigned to crime as a part of life. It’s insane.
It's acceptance that nothing will ever be done and that nothing will ever change.
The problem is the build it and they will come. Eckington + Hill East + Bladensburg Rd + H St are areas notorious for gang relatec violence that were off limits to most of us living in NW . This is where many on here have chosen to live . At your own peril I would say .
The new buildings with rooftops and other amenities are what attracted many but it's a very high cost to pay .

That is largely because we have DC police, Capitol Police, Park Police, etc. And DC has to deal with political caravans, and innumerable protests. DC has inordinately high protection and security demands that no other city has.
That's why it's so low on the list!

They list the methodology at the bottom of the article. When people talk about how dangerous a city is, they're talking about things like (to quote the top comment at the time of this post), "assaults, armed robbery, open air drug use, murder, etc."

They're not talking about COVID vaccination rates, potholes on the street, and "perception of safety based on Numbeo website visits." I'm not saying these things don't matter, I'm saying that these are two very different conversations. This is a crap article and a crap list that literally tells people nothing about how dangerous DC actually is.
This isn't really super meaningful when you look at their methodology. It's a huge list of factors and somewhat arbitrary weightings that aren't directly safety related. Like most people don't mean debt to income ratio when they're talking safety.

According to this, several other cities in Florida and the Gulf are safer for natural disasters than DC. I know there's other natural disasters besides hurricanes, but I can't think of any natural disaster that DC is exposed to to cause it to be that low on the list.

The methodology says they ranked the 150 most populous cities, plus included at least 2 of the most populous cities per state.
Baltimore and Columbia are the two most populated cities in Maryland.

Murder rate is higher than many big “dangerous” cities in Latin America
I mean, you can literally google this and see that it is blatantly not true. The list of cities by homicide rate is almost exclusively Latin American. There are 4 US cities on the list, and DC is not one of them. There is more recent data available, but the only other US city that pops up on that list is New Orleans, which is famously not Washington DC.

Murder rate is probably the best proxy in some regards for overall criminality, at least it’s a very high end, because it’s by far the hardest crime to cover up. As such in the global south murder rate is used as the de facto violent crime rate as other crimes are poorly reported and poorly counted.
If Japan can skew their murder rate I'm sure plenty of stuff isn't reported in south America, lol.

Half the people making comments probably didn’t even read the definition used in this article for “safest”. Some comments mainly are focused on crime and not on the other parameters like vaccination status, unemployment, and infrastructure.
DC has its challenges but still prefer it to many other cities on this list.
