I've been looking for places where I could join a community of ping pong or tennis players, or both, but I've had no luck. I'm not looking for a team, or anything committal, just somewhere to go after work to play a few games and maybe meet some new friends. Is there anything out there like that?

For tennis there really isn't an option to go to courts where people will be hanging out and inviting people there to join. Most courts are super busy so those kinds of things need to be planned in advance.

Tennis: you can sign up for free “classes” (mostly pick-up games) with DC DPR: https://dpr.dc.gov/.
Isn't that mostly "bring-a-friend" and/or reservations only?

I concur. I have frequented WDCTT, and they are fantastic. Their league nights are fun.
Continental Lounge in Rosslyn has a couple of tables, and there’s an outdoor table in Freedom Park.
I don't even know what it is. Just looks like lazy tennis
Seems like tennis for people with no endurance and ping pong for people without reflexes.

People only play pickle ball these days. There's ping pong tables at Comet in upper NW. Maybe you can find a club up there
