I know what you mean though back to school time always brings out an awful respiratory virus. It’s really no fun combined with the Covid nonsense. We all had to deal with.

I'm wondering if going through covid has made us all a little more vulnerable to this thing. I've got friends across the country reporting the same thing.

That and then neti pot as needed.

That RSV number is a huge underreport. For one, they simply don't test adults at all, including those who end up in the ER, like my wife this week, and for another they don't bother testing kids unless admitted. Last year it took me something like four months to stop hacking out my lungs, and my kid basically coughed non-stop from July to March.
And the stupid thing is, the test is cheap, easy and 100 percent reliable, can be done at home, and literally no one wants to sell it. Yeah, okay, the treatment for RSV and other "colds" is the same, but boy it'd be nice not to go give it to other family members and know what a ride we're going to be in for.

I've been wondering why they aren't reporting that adults are suffering from this too. I've been sick since Monday and have been wondering if other adults are also getting sick.

I feel like it’s being under reported as well. I’ve seen a lot of kiddos and adults who had similar issues during the same time. Medical professionals could not help them because they tested negative for Covid.

Extremely common bug that I think was generally just called “a bad cold” or regarded as a generic respiratory infection until recent years. Not sure what the catalyst for public adoption of its real name (RSV) was— I’d guess the pandemic.
Underscore_Guru t1_it7l6rg wrote
RSV is very common in newborn babies as well and is especially deadly to pre-mature babies.
tyrannosaurus_r t1_it7lg0y wrote
Indeed. If there’s a bright spot to the pandemic, it’s at least that some folks are now cognizant of how dangerous even “routine” illnesses are.
moosedogmonkey12 t1_it8ife2 wrote
Very common but mostly serious among young children so you’re not crazy. If you don’t have children or work with them it’s not crazy to not know. Adults do get it but we don’t really test for it so you’d just be sick with an upper respiratory thing for awhile.
bunki8 t1_it7cin0 wrote
It has been this way for months now in DC. My daughter had RSV and was in ChIldren’s ER without ever getting an ICU bed back in early August. For the respiratory illnesses the kids really just need forced oxygen while they recover and that usually only exists in ER and ICU. Those emergency departments have to be totally exhausted :(

maidenofmp t1_it8lz0c wrote
My kid recently fell down half a flight of stairs. They hit their head on every step coming down and their nose started bleeding when they landed. We went to Children's for evaluation after consulting their primary care nurse line. We waited over 8 hours overnight in the filthy, crowded waiting room to be taken to a hastily cleaned "fast track" room with crushed Cheetos on the floor. I knew it would be awful, but it exceeded my low expectations. I work with adult patients elsewhere and was appalled.
Even if your kid has a serious injury, Children's (and other facilities in the region) are so short staffed and overwhelmed that they won't be seen immediately unless they present with acute, life-threatening symptoms.
It was eye-opening to see how many parents were using the ER like primary or urgent care for reasons like their kid having a fever for 3 weeks. Part of the problem is the dearth of pediatric urgent care facilities in DC proper, as well as the increasing inability to get same or next day appointments at primary care practices.

maidenofmp t1_it8ssk2 wrote
No. Head injury that results in blood or fluid leaking from a head orifice (nose, ear) indicates a potentially serious injury and warrants emergency care. We called the nurse line before going to the ER to affirm this and were told to go the ER immediately.

Whenever people bring up these headlines, I remind people that many, many parents take their children to the hospital with literally any cough or fever. No shade because I know it's scary when your kiddo is sick but for most people who have RSV, it's just a cold. This is just the time of year when people get fevers and colds.
sacredxsecret t1_it7vcbp wrote
Those kids aren't admitted to the hospital without just cause. The concern is not that the ER is busy, but that the hospital rooms are full.
Pipes_of_Pan t1_it7wxkx wrote
Sure, but we're also talking about "multiple hospitals" being three - one in DC, one in Fairfax and one in Baltimore. I am just saying that these articles come out every year when kiddos are getting sick and it does not mean that there is a crisis situation.

My 6 month old was admitted 2 weeks ago. Criteria for admission at Inova Fairfax was O2 sat less than 90% awake 88% sleeping. We had to stay 2 nights in the hospital on oxygen. So yes, she had a cold, but she was also hypoxic. I don't know that I'd have felt comfortable going home if her O2 sat was hanging out at 91. Also we started at the peds urgent care and took an ambulance to the ER so it's not like we jumped straight to ER.
Pipes_of_Pan t1_ita5kut wrote
Sure and I’m very glad you got care but 1) there was a bed for y’all at one of the hospitals mentioned in this article and 2) these headlines pop up every year around this time. Kids get sick in the fall! Hospitals prepare properly for this and the media sensationalizes the situation.

My kid has had it all week. Fever was short lived, only two days. But the congestion and cough have staying power. Vicks vapor-rub, sitting in a steamy bathroom for two episodes of bluey before naps and bed, humidifier full blast, and teaspoons of honey for the cough have managed his symptoms pretty well.
Aiiisch t1_it873jq wrote

I was in the Children’s ER waiting room yesterday. It was unreal. It was full of people and impossible to social distance. The wait was a minimum of 8 hours. Most of the people in the ER were very young children and were POC. We ended up leaving because we could get a same day doc appointment quicker than we could be seen in the ER.

Unfortunately Covid taught the MBAs that run hospitals that providing life saving treatments to everyone in your community doesn’t make a lot of money. You make even less money for kids.
They are all trying to tailor their hospitals to focus on expensive, elective surgeries that only wealthier people with good insurance can afford.
So expect more stories like this in the years to come
