My boyfriend and I are pretty new to the area and are looking for places to listen to live music and meet people. He is a musician and is really interested in eventually being in a band, and we figure this is the best way to meet friends he can play music with. Any help or recommendations are appreciated!!

There's tons of live music around. Good venues include 930 club, the Black Cat, Echostage, the Fillmore, and, near you, Birchmere and Jammin Java. But there's a long tradition of basement shows, shows in restaurants and store fronts, church basements, and plenty of bar gigs. Nova leans country/folk/Americana whereas DC and MD bring in a broader array of touring acts with lots of hip hop, gogo, jazz and indie thrown in.

The above with all the broader DC venues, but in Falls Church, state theater can be a lot of fun. Venue holds 850.

There’s a rehearsal studio in DC called 7Drum, where they run lessons and bands practice out of. They have a small venue called The Pocket, and they also regularly host open-house potluck jams, as well as Flashband, where you sign up to form a band for a month, culminating in a show at a pro venue somewhere in DC. They also have a bulletin board for bands looking for members, vice versa. If he’s serious about joining a band, look up their website (they’re on google). I spend a lot of time there in case that’s not obvious

Check out the DC Music Live app. It compiles all of the concerts at the many dc (and Virginia and Maryland) music venues
