Hi all! Born in dc and renewing a passport. Hoping someone ran into this problem as well. I searched the internet and couldn’t find a solution.

For place of birth it asks for city and state. For state you can select DC, but I’m not sure what to do for city. It doesn’t seem like a field you can leave blank. Curious if anyone recently dealt with this and knows how to handle. Thanks!

Edit: appreciate everyone’s response! Going with Washington as city and dc as state

I think you can just do Washington for city. If the Post Office formats it like “City: Washington, State: DC,” so can you.

Do what it in the way it is currently listed on your passport. This is a renewal after all, and I’m guessing places of birth rarely change.

I was also born in DC and renewed my passport a few years ago. I’m pretty sure I put Washington as the city and DC as the state.

Putting "Washington" for the city should be fine. If you look at the actual form DS-82 for passport renewal there's just one field called 4. Place of Birth (City & State if in the U.S., or City & Country as it is presently known.)

Bonus if it is ever relevant: we're also in Washington County. Washington City and Washington County and the District of Columbia used to be three separate things!

Always use Washington as the city on every form that asks it.

It’s always bugged me that Government forms want you to list Washington as our city, even though DC has no cities. (Washington and Georgetown were abolished shortly after the civil war and are just nicknames now.) You’d think if anyone wanted the correct information, it would be the Government.

I was born in DC and on formal documents I use “District of Columbia” as the city.
