Hello all. I know that Google is a thing, but I wanted to get this group's perspective of some local organizations that are doing good work in our community that you've seen first hand.

Im particularly interested in immigrant/refugee issues, food security, and environmental clean up/protection, but I welcome any ideas!

First, Great Question. I think this will help others find a place to give!!

Second: What are your hot buttons? What matters to you? The replies you'll get will be all over the place, and most will be doing "good works" depending on your definition of "good". Here are some of the thousands in the DMV. But , in answer to your question: Mary's House for Older Adults. They are building a home for LGBTQ+ seniors to continue living their authentic lives. Many LGBTQ+ seniors are forced back into the closet when needing to transition to a "group home" or "Senior Facility" and/or forcibly separated from their partners. MH is working to build a place where that does not and will not happen! Local organization, Local founder, local impact!

I agree with all the charities named and would add Capital Area Food Bank and Christ House (medical care for homeless men).

Miriam’s Kitchen does a lot of great work towards battling food insecurity and chronic homelessness in DC, and one that I’ve personally volunteered with quite a bit

Crittenton Services of Greater Washington—the best kept secret in DC. It serves teen girls in underserved areas and is knocking it out if the park: 100% of their girls graduate HS; 82% go to college or job training programs. 0% pregnancies, although they have a program for pregnant and parenting teens.

Can you tell I’m a fan?
