We're visiting Reston and have to pickup our son at Union Station at 11:30pm. Where would you spend the hours after dinner until this time?
Would it be better to wait in Reston/Tyson's Corner area instead of DC? (We also have a tall van, so can't park in garages.)
Open to anything (bars, arcades, etc.) Thank you.
I’d look at Reston town center and see if anything strikes your fancy. That def easiest from a parking perspective.
If you go into DC you may just need to drive around a bit to find parking. If the van is too tall for garages then I imagine finding a spot on street parking might be a challenge. If you do go that route I’d check out the areas on H St NE just east of Union Station. Or Union Market.

Have your son take the metro to the just opened Reston station
We could but it's be after midnight and we could pick him up and bring him back earlier than if he took the trains.
We still might.. depends on if he gets the last train to Metro center.
Following! I’m headed to Reston around Christmas for a couple of days. We may be moving there next Fall and want to explore for a couple of days to help me become familiar. Looking for any recs!
DC definitely has more interesting options than Reston. If I were in your shoes, I’d see if there is a Caps game or an artist performing at 9:30 or the Anthem that evening.
Well, you’ve got a set number of hours to invest and idle hands are the devil’s work, as they say. So, one thing you could do is try to obtain your mermaiding certificate, which, if you’re successful, comes with a custom video of your mermaid graduation recital. You’ll no doubt leave with a lifelong feeling of purpose and accomplishment.
In case you are bashful when it comes to swimming in front of others, another idea you could try is dining in the dark while blindfolded. In this way, your shyness will be overcome, as the blindfold acts as a shield against the judging eyes of others.
All that said, the weather sure is nice right now and it would be a shame to spend the whole evening cooped up indoors. So, if you want to have a relaxing evening outdoors, you might consider taking a ride on an “endangered donkey”. Note that there is a weight limit on this option and the rides aren’t free.
At the end of the day, it’s important that you do the things in life that are important to you. You only get one life, so never waste a minute. Personally, I’ve never done any of that stuff and I’m unable to take responsibility if you get injured whilst taking any of my travel advice.
If you’re into ping-pong hit up Spin in penn quarter. If you’re into putt putt check out Swingers in DuPont Circle. I live in DC and can’t recommend a single thing worthwhile at night by union station.

Also, the drive between Reston and DC is usually longer than people expect. Sometimes it’s 30 minutes sometimes it’s 90 minutes.
If you're on 66, there's Clarendon. Tysons is more interesting than Reston. GTown is def. my choice. Also, consider crime. Much safer in aforementioned locations.

Union Market. I’d recommend the free parking there and hanging out until 10. After that, you could do a night National Mall monument tour if you wanted until 11:30. There is also plenty of free street parking right on the mall at night.
