D.C Hidden Gem

This past week I stayed in Washington D.C. The shock I can not explain. I feel like D.C is a hidden gem that no one lets you in on. I have travelled all over and have never been recommended to visit D.C.

The moment I landed at Reagan I was greeted with the amazing smells of food. The food is to die for. The people I met were also almost all pleasant and friendly. I also got to travel outside of Downtown and experience the nightlife which is far from boring.

There also so many more job opportunities. I will definitely be considering moving here in the future.

This is a romanticized version of DC if i've ever seen one.

We're certainly not known for pleasant/friendly people, great food, nightlife, or downtown lol

Trust me when I was there people were asking me what was I smoking Bc that is not DC. I was really had a blast. Maybe I got lucky but I did not have one bad experience.

We're not known for those things, but all can be found here. It's just unusual for newbies to find that.

That's kind of the whole aesthetic though. If you think NYC is too overwhelming, Nashville is too tryhard, Austin is too Texas (and too hot), SF is too grey, Chicago is too flyover and Toronto is too Canadian - DC kind of falls right in the middle of all that. It's well connected, on the proper coast, isn't called Boston, has a diverse food scene (esp if you include the suburbs), diverse neighborhoods, reasonable transit, and is one of the most educated cities in the US.

well.. people from all over the world come to DC and talk about how friendly it is. We are definitely known for having good (albeit expensive) food. World renown chefs come to DC to open restaurants. Our nightlife isn't going to compare well to LA or NYC but that's really just clubs. There are at least 4 different areas in town that have active thriving nightlife and finally, our downtown holds the Smithsonian, national monuments, tons of retail shopping and restaurants so I'm not sure what you are talking about. Not faulting you for not liking DC but no need to dig at someone who just enjoyed visiting your city

I have given up on responding to certain negative comments at this point. I find it funny I’m being told I have a “romanticized” experience because I had a good experience.

What confuses me even more is the negativity and then willingly living there unless they can’t afford to leave.

It’s funny that you call it a hidden gem because it’s literally the capital of our country. But I’m glad you had a good visit. I had a similar experience when I came out to DC for an internship, which is why I decided to move here.

Glad you enjoyed your visit, OP! The DC area is top tier in terms of culture, food, entertainment, and nature. Id say what keeps it from being underrated/hidden gem is that the cost of living is quite high for the middle class, so a lot of people move to cheaper areas like Philly or the South bc of it

If that is your opinion that’s okay! I’m coming from a higher cost of living location and travel frequently but that is my experience.

OP leaves a very kind post, and the first thing yall latch onto is the nickname they use for the airport. The “What’s Reagan?” crowd is as predictable as the “Dans cafe” crowd.

It's okay, people without a solid enough sense of identity cling onto political tribalism here, which they then use to Club anyone who gives even the slightest hint of deviency from their chosen orthodoxy.

They're best ignored. It's common for locals to call it national or DCA. Calling a place by its formal name is also normal and understandable
