High end home builders in dc?

Hey y’all I’m moving to northern Virginia early on next year and I’m looking to continue growing and becoming a master craftsman. I currently work as an in house crew lead (mostly framing but can also am proficient at finish carpentry) for a design/build firm in South Carolina. The caliber of the average carpenter here is pretty bad and I’ve kind of plateaued skill wise. I really want more challenging things to build and to work for a company with a higher standard in terms of quality. I’m interested in taking another year or two at least to work under someone who is a master carpenter that I can learn from. So I say all that just to ask: who are the best custom home builders in the dmv? Preferably ones that work mainly in Fairfax county but I will most likely be moving closer to the city after my partners lease is up. Got my own truck and tools too but I’d like to work for a company that is very much employee centered and offers killer benefits and good pay.

This is a great answer. Stroll through Georgetown (some of the oldest and most expensive homes in the region) and the majority of the renos are being handled by Zantzinger.

OP you should consider taking this route in general. Maybe look online at listed renos/new construction by local govt's from permitting. Or maybe take a drive/walk around some higher end neighborhoods and take a look at who is doing what either from signage, or write down the address to go look up. Sorry I can't be more helpful!

yup they drive dark green pickups with a calligraphy Z on them. the do a ton in Georgetown, Ward 3, and up the Potomac. They charge an arm and leg, I hope they pay their workers/subs well.

I have lots of trade contacts. There’s a contractor in NOVA looking for master carpenter level full time with gov contract work on historic homes I can pass on as well. Must be a US citizen. I enjoy networking in my industry and have been in my field for nearly 20 years.

There’s plenty of work here that needs doing. So much that you could run a one-man show and be your own boss. Join the Cleveland Park listserv to browse the variety of carpentry jobs that homeowners are searching for. Also, word-of-mouth can carry you really far in DC/Northern VA so it‘s in your best interest to put your best work out there as much as possible.
