I have seen so much discussion about Zoolights this year. Many people in my life going, posts here, social media and I cannot understand why anyone would use their precious leisure time on this. It lead me to thinking...what is the most overrated holiday activity in the area? It used to be Xmas pop up bars, some people probably think the fourth of July fireworks, I went to one of the Xmas markets at the site of the Van Gogh experience in NE and it was pathetic, certainly going out drinking the night before thanksgiving is a veritable amateur hour...

What do you think?

Everyone has different interests and values. Also the target audience for Zoolights is kids.

Definitely designed for kids but I feel like that could be advertised better. I felt like it was advertised as a fun Christmas thing to do in DC and was disappointed when I went, maybe should be advertised as “a fun Christmas thing to do WITH your kids”

Sure people definitely have different MO's. I do know plenty of adults who went without kids.

yeah because its a free activity to do outside with people - heaven forbid we expected to be enjoyable.

Perhaps you would be kind enough to enlighten us with your assessment of what constitutes leisure-worthy activities? Ideally, define a 1-10 scale with examples at each level so that we are able to properly calibrate our recreational activities to meet your expectations.

I went as it was the first time it happened while I have been living in DC. Was it amazing? No. It was fun to walk around with a friend while chatting, drinking cocktails, and looking at the lights and taking pictures of them. It was an artsy walking/drinking experience.

To each their own. I like Zoolights because it’s fun to walk around in the cold, drink some warm alcoholic beverage, and socialize with the people with whom I attend. Also, it’s free.

I’ve always found going out on New Year’s Eve a subpar experience, but I get why other folks enjoy it. I think a lot of bridge and tunnel folk get scammed with the big NYE parties downtown, though, which sucks.

ZooLights was good when I went there in 2017 (and/or 2018?). You could go into the small mammals and reptiles houses. I went in 2019, and it was worse, and now, apparently it's much worse.

Wow you sound beat because all those activities are actually fun. I would have accepted

  • Halloween bar crawl
  • Most New Years activities
