When I was a child, a 10 lb. bag of Madam Gougoose jasmine rice would run for a solid $5. Granted inflation has knocked that up a bit, but the idea that I would pay $30-40 for that same bag is painful. Absolutely painful.

Can anyone recommend affordable markets for rice and other Latin/Caribbean foods?

Thank you in advance!

If you can drive out, I get like a 25 lb bag of jasmine rice from Good Fortune for like $25. Or like any Asian supermarket

Sounds promising. I used to live in Alexandria and practically lived at LA Mart. So the suggestions of VA based Asian markets (H Mart, Good Fortune, etc) are spot on. But I also refuse to believe that renting a car or taking a looooong metro ride to another state is the only way!

On a different note, cars in the city make sense for some of us. It’s comes down to a question of lifestyle and I see that clearly now. 😮‍💨

I buy jasmine rice at Trader Joe’s, a bag of 3 pounds. It’s fragrant and delicious. I don’t know the price off hand, but I’m super frugal so it’s not expensive.

Mmm. You’re onto something. Even if Instacart isn’t on to it, I may have to take a trip and see if this is fact or fiction. 😅 At minimum, I could eat rice twice a day, so the sheer size is important.

I got it about 6 months ago but even at 30 bucks would have been cheaper than buying smaller bags at aldi. Best of luck!

For fragrant and delicious rice, I add a little star anise and cardamom to the instant pot when I make rice.

Giant Food has a 10lb bag of jasmine rice for $10 on sale. There is also a 20lb bag, but it’s more expensive per ounce, surprisingly.

Try Asian grocery delivery! I used this from time to time and it’s reliable. Fresh vegetables are great too. Looks like 10lb jasmine rice is on sale for $15. https://www.sayweee.com/en

Message me if you are interested. I think by referring you we each get $20 off ($10 off for two orders).
