Where Should I Enroll My Kids While I’m On A Work Assignment In Southwest Waterfront?

I have a work assignment in SW DC soon & it will last until the summer. The thing is, I have to bring my four children with me due to being freshly divorced. But as I’m sure everyone knows, the crime in that area has been heavy lately, so I don’t think I want my children going to the schools there. Does anyone have any recommendations regarding where to enroll them? I'm unfamiliar with the area & I don't want to register my kids in a “not-so-great” school unintentionally.

I have a son in the 4th, twin boys in the 7th grade & a daughter in the 10th.

I appreciate any help you can provide.

Live in Ward 3 in an apartment near Murch (elem), Deal (middle) and JR (HS) and commute to SW via subway. The kids will all be able to walk to school and there are many nearby apartment buildings. I think this will logistically be the easiest as all 3 schools are w/in blocks of one another. Look for apartments on Connecticut Ave NW.

Honestly, Op needs to tell us their budget. Also deal is massive, they could live in Glover Park instead and use Hardy/Stoddert. And parts of arlington work well too. But everything we are suggesting are 5-6k/mo for a 4 bedroom. .

There are a lot of options, but the one I suggested has the benefit of proximity (good schools w/in a few blocks of each other, easily walkable, w/lots of rentals nearby) and would not require a car for drop offs. JR for the 10th grader is not walkable from GP. For 4 months they could fit in a smaller than 4br, this area has few of those. Hope work is compensating for lodging and per diem, pretty disruptive to move kids to a new school system for 4 months. OP, can you have extended family stay with the kids for such a short time so as not to disrupt their schooling and lives?

oh yeah, but the 30-series busses are very popular with JR students and pretty frequent; i'm hoping the 10th grader can take care of themselves a bit. commute would require a car though; but Glover Park is a bit cheaper.

It would depend if OP would want any of the older kids to walk over and pick up younger kids, very easy in the cluster I mentioned w/o a need for a non-city kid to start taking public transit for school.

Hopefully OP can work out something to keep kids where they are. To move them for only part of a semester would be very disruptive.

SW Waterfront is pretty safe, there are a few blocks that have issues but its definitely better than many parts of the city.

This would be the best idea if it weren't for the yellow line closures. The commute to SW on the blue/orange/silver is pretty long, although not terrible.

Do you have to live in SW also? If not, there are many neighborhoods where you could live, with good schools.

Jefferson's school profile says only 10% of students are performing at grade level for math and only 27% in ELA. Considering the absolute joke that standardized testing grade levels are, it's likely significantly less than that.

I would not consider that "fine" under any circumstances.

Okay. It's also a place that has a great library, maker space, engaging teachers, a positive culture set by the principal, and proximity to SW. I'm sure the OPs kids will be just fine there for six months.
