Second 2Amy’s especially if they want to walk the cathedral grounds. But depending on the week day, can be a long wait. They don’t take reservations.
Your first resources are available here and here.
Unless you are in a residential area of the city, there is no such thing as reliably free and easy long-term parking. Please read parking signs carefully, even locals get confused sometimes.
Useful apps for parking include ParkMobile for street parking and SpotHero for garage spaces.
Visiting a friend in the city? Ask them for a free visitor parking pass from any MPD station.
Did you receive a ticket? Are you guilty? If so, pay it. Pictures and incorrect information doesn't matter.

Lauriol Plaza. I think you pay a few bucks, but back in the day the in-laws would come in to town looking for something precisely like this. They have a lot in the back.
There are a bunch of parking garages south of M street in Georgetown.
If they wanna spend money, they can valet at Fiola Mare.
Bistro Aracosia is our favorite restaurant in DC and has easy street parking—and little to no traffic, aside from getting through the one Georgetown intersection after coming over the bridge. There is one or two other restaurants in that area as well.
lebanese taverna validates!
Not NW, but union market has lots of parking.
Comet pizza!
Happy cake day!
Eastern Market. 20 restaurants, pick one! Most casual.
Love the choice, but eastern is right in the name
Which is bizarre; it's easier to get to SE from Alexandria than NW, and Eastern Market is easy to get into and out of from 295/395.
