Hi! I'm about an hour and 45 mins from DC, so I am not super familiar with the area. I was just hoping for some nice restaurant suggestions around this area! I want to take my partner somewhere that has a good selection of whisky if possible and maybe a really good steak for his birthday. The only thing is, I'm plant based, so if theres any way there is a singular pb option on the menu that would be a definite plus. TIA!

ETA: the places for whisky and dinner can be separate as well!

I'd try St. Aslem for dinner. Nice stakehouse with some good plant based options and (if I recall correctly) some good whiskey.

If you really want to lean into the whiskey thing, Jack Rose is one of the best whiskey bars in the country. The food is just ok, but the whiskey selection is unparalleled.

For more options, Washingtonian just dropped a massive list of the best restaurants in DC. Most, but not all of it is higher end. I've been to 30ish places on the list and they're all excellent.

Seconding this suggestion. I like St Anselm too, but this has the added benefit of not needing to travel far post-dinner.

I've seen a lot of folks recommend St. Anselm, but I've never really gotten the hype. Maybe that's just me.

St Anslem is great. That whole area near union market can be good for a night out

Dinner - definitely recommend Albi. A bit pricey but worth the experience.

Love love Albi but they don't have steak on the menu.

St. Anselm is delicious and modern, but it's not going to be your classic steakhouse experience. Bourbon steak would be my recommendation if you're going for a steak house. The vegetarian options will likely be sides, but the sides are amazing and won't feel like a compromise.

That's totally fine! Price I'm not worried about, I just want him to have a good dinner. Thank you!

If you want whisky, you want Jack Rose. One of the best whisky bars in the world. Bring your Amex, they have stuff you won’t find anywhere else and a staff that will help you find it. (Remember those four digit COVID payments? I spent all mine at Jack Rose on stuff I’ll never see again) (I was an ‘essential’ worker, so my income was actually higher during COVID, so whatever). As for steak, yeah, St Anselms.

This is the whisky suggestion I needed thank you so much! Ive been checking out St. Anselms since the previous suggestion. Hope you can go back there soon and enjoy yourself!

I was at st A three days ago, if you go, get the biscuits. Any decent steakhouse will have a passable whisky collection. But if you want a 25 year old Laphroig aged in rum casks blessed by the arch priest of Triest, you gotta do jack rose.

Joe's Seafood, Prime Steak & Stone Crab. They have some plant-based menu options too.

Also get on their email list to get the password to the speakeasy which changes. This wouldn’t have been my first thought, but I actually think it’s best for the plant and meat options. The speakeasy, Hyde adds that extra something special. This is a great choice.

Great for the plant based (on our return dining list)

Not so great for a steak, though

It's amazing how badly i mis-red the original post. OP, keep oyster oyster for when you're here dining solo or with pb friends.

He doesn’t mind seafood either. He just doesn’t get to eat steak super often because I cook mainly and it’s always vegan. I’ll still check out there suggestion. Thank you both!

The only non-plant based dish when we went was an oyster appetizer.

Everything else was plant based. It was absolutely delicious. We are going to check it out again when they change their menu with the seasons.

Non vegetarians btw.

Check out chicken and whiskey for whiskey (Navy Yard) and Albi for dinner. I think that may be the combo you're looking for.

I know your peanut brain is working really hard, but I have already done that and was looking for (helpful) input from people who live in the area. Thanks for absolutely nothing though!
