It's not a "breakaway" region.... it is Moldova. By framing it as a "breakaway" region, russia is trying to set up a defense for why they are going to attack there.

It is a region Russia has occupied since 1990 specifically because they wanted to create a perpetual territorial conflict that would prevent Moldova from ever really integrating with the rest of the EU. These sorts of conflicts are how they operate with any nation that is not a member of NATO and small enough Russia thinks they can bully.

They are referring to Transnistria which is a breakaway region WITHIN Moldova that is under UN sanctioned Russian military control. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transnistria.
The Russians are saying that Ukraine is planning an attack on the area, which is effectively an attack on Moldova, but the Moldovan government has just been 'rearranged' and the new Moldovan leaders seems fine with Ukraine entering the area.
The Russians aren't going to attack Transnistria, they already control it, BUT if what the Russians are saying is true and Ukraine attacks, and Modova doesn't intervene, Russia might attack Moldova.
This is a serious escalation either way, because it is pulling more countries into the conflict.

I know where Transnistria is.... It's in Moldova. Not a single (non-russian) UN entity recognizes ANY claim by russia on this region as legitimate. Regardless of whether russians are there not or not does not make any claim legitimate. Hell, the russians are in the Donbass... should we recognize that as well?
My point is the same... the russians are stirring up trouble so that they can "come to the rescue"... just like they are trying right now in Ukraine. So... any attempt by russia to "claim" they are simply protecting their own is total bullshit. They shouldn't be there in the first place. And if Moldova asks NATO for help, they should get it.

Who the fuck cares what Russia thinks. If Moldova wants to invite Ukraine in to help clean up the mess that Russia created than that’s what will happen. It is the same if Moldova asks Romania for help. Also, what is Russia going to do? Invade Ukraine? They’re already doing that. Invade Romania? Not a chance since Putin is terrified of NATO.

There is a huge Russian ammunition depot in Transnistria, which Ukraine would like to have in return for a little help to Moldavia to get Transnistria back under their control. The Cobasna ammunition depot has been referred to as one of the largest if not the largest ammunition depot in Eastern Europe contains up to 20,000 tons of Soviet-era weapons from the 14th Guards Army of the USSR and also from the former states of Czechoslovakia and East Germany. Currently, it is guarded by around 1,500 Russian soldiers.

A former VKontakte friend, who unfriended me when last year's invasion started (so I blocked him in kind), explained to me the case for Russia holding onto Transnistria, which was that there was this extremely rare and obscure Turkic ethnic group that's majority-Christian that needs to be protected from "genocide".
Mind you, this guy could be best described as a "4chan tankie". Like, Eric Cartman-level immature, who used racist, homophobic, and anti-Semitic language to defend the USSR, China, and Putin while bashing "Western liberal Russophobic fascists".
The Russian case for holding onto far-flung territories like South Ossetia, Transnistria, Donbass, and even fully de jure territories like Chechnya, the Kurils, etc. has always been flimsy, illogical, and incoherent. At this point, we can ignore all of their concern trolling and whining about the "mean old liberal NATO West" after what they did in Ukraine.
