I just wanna say this is no surprise. Lula has always been corrupt and out for himself and his cronies. I get that reddit Liberals hate Bolsonaro and all, but Lula is just as bad for the rainforest and just as corrupt if not more corrupt. Stop supporting criminal politicians just because you hate their political rival.

> Brazilian Amazon deforestation reached its worst-ever February level in the second month of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's presidential term, provisional data showed Friday.

> The INPE report included data only up to February 17, but was already an increase from the previous worst February, in 2022, when far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro was still in office.

> Citation: Worst-ever February rainforest data for Brazilian Amazon retrieved 24 February 2023 from https://phys.org/news/2023-02-worst-ever-february-rainforest-brazilian-amazon.

Brazilians have a rapidly growing population. They need to feed and house their children. Until people realize we need to adopt a world wide pledge on a two child policy. There really isn't much hope. 2 billion more of us in the next 40 years. Nature will correct this trend if we don't, and nature is not known for being kind.

Has it decreased at all since he took office or remained growing?

Basically just curious if it's a record due to previous rises or under Lula it has grown as well

The highest ever, according to what I've seen, was in 1995. However, the year of 2004 had the closest to 1994 and it was under Lula's government.

“Last month, Amazon deforestation was down 61 percent from a year earlier, according to the same source.”

“Over Bolsonaro's presidency, average annual deforestation increased by 75 percent compared to the previous decade.”

Jeez the very article you posted pretty specifically contradicts the statements you’re making.

According to this brazilian article, the deforestation has been the highest since 2015, subsequently being higher than the deforestation during Bolsonaro's government
