may be a subtle subtext to this... let him off with a non-binding slap and he doesn't need to force through the judicial changes to get his get out of jail free card? that would be a significant de-escalation....

Yea, or a good and extremely generous compromise would be to just let him go into exile with his wife and Yair. He can then just retire and at least leave everyone alone. Everyone wins, kinda.
