This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 88%. (I'm a bot)

> A hurricane named Ian or Fiona will never threaten land again after the World Meteorological Organization removed the names from a rotating list due to the damage and lives lost during the 2022 tropical season.

> Hurricane Fiona retired - Fiona was the first major hurricane of the 2022 tropical cyclone season and the most intense system on record ever to impact maritime Canada.

> DRONE VIDEO SHOWS 50-FOOT WAVES AND DESTRUCTIVE WINDS IN THE HEART OF HURRICANE FIONA. Hurricane Ian retired - Ian will be remembered for being the costliest disaster in all of 2022 and for being the deadliest storm to strike Florida in more than 80 years.

Never gave hurricane names any thought but I guess somebody has to do it… maybe.

I think I read the whole thing, but there's no explanation of why the names are retired rather than being reused. Is it a chance to introduce some slightly less English names: Farrah and Idris?

Also... Is this really news?

it is like jersey retirement in sports, in that if you have a big career no one can use your number. usually it is to honor the losses and ensure that big hurricanes will be the only ones of their name after they happen

They don't need to retire names to introduce new ones. They retire names of big storms so there isn't confusion later.

You can find names for Atlantic storm for the upcoming years NOAA. Many are not English like Katia, Ernesto, Nestor, Olga, and Omar.
