This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 83%. (I'm a bot)

> MOSCOW - A Russian court on Tuesday rejected an appeal by U.S. basketball star Brittney Griner of her nine-year prison sentence for drug possession, a step that could move her closer to a possible high-stakes prisoner swap between Moscow and Washington.

> Reflecting growing pressure on the Biden administration to do more to bring Griner home, Blinken took the unusual step of revealing publicly in July that Washington had made a "Substantial proposal" to get Griner home, along with Paul Whelan, an American serving a 16-year sentence in Russia for espionage.

> ADVERTISEMENT. Blinken didn't elaborate, but The Associated Press and other news organizations have reported that Washington has offered to exchange Griner and Whelan for Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer who is serving a 25-year sentence in the U.S. and once earned the nickname the "Merchant of death."

Meh, She chose to travel with it. She made her choice. “Forgot” my ass. This is one giant education check to everyone that takes their freedom for granted. She’s not the first incident like this that has ever happened. But she sure as hell has been made the poster child for it because of her fame. She has been used to set a precedence. Should it be changed? Sure, should she have traveled with it? No.

I have traveled to Russia at least 20 times in my career but have avoided it since 2007 out of fear of arbitrary harassment for being an American and visiting our rep office there. Griner should have known better than to go there at all, let alone to bring her dope with her. Now we have to waste treasure and Dept of State resources because of her poor decision making.
