Japan should just cut to the chase and rebuild one of their old sunken Battleships and make it space-capable

Well, I suppose then we'd be prepared for the Gamilas too.

Didn't Japanese nationalists cause the conflict in the first place by shooting during first contact?

Russia just screwing everything up for China's plans to extend its sphere of influence.

Given China has no plans to attack Japan, this makes Japan even less attractive to skilled workers. There are a lot of top Japanese scientists working in China

Owing to the abysmal academic pay in Japan (haven't been adjusted since the 80s). Now it's just getting worse as the first-generation Japanese scientists who took the gamble are reporting good things and luring top Japanese students.

Part of having a sphere of influence is being able to project power if needed, not necessarily planning to project power against a specific state.

That is interesting though about China gobbling up skilled Japanese workers. Same thing they do with TSMC.

What can possibly go wrong if Japan launches a first strike against North Korea, Russia, or China?

lolomfgkthxbai t1_ixl5pvb wrote

First strike capability just means having missiles and bombs that can be used against an enemy on their turf instead of waiting for them to come get shot. The Ukraine war shows that if you don’t have the range to strike your enemies in their bases, you will be shot at with missiles until you don’t have infrastructure anymore.

If that happens something has already gone horribly wrong

Japan is an easy political target due to WW2. They don’t have a choice but to prepare.

All the neighboring countries pick on them - China with their incursion into Japanese waters North Korea fires missiles at them, kidnapped their citizens.

I mean… you rape, murder and pillage your neighbours and then build a shrine celebrating the perpetrators… lots of people are going to hold a grudge

And it also doubles as a political tool for autocrats to unite their population and do bad things to other countries and get away with it.

No doubt Japan did horrible things during WW2.

Japan is tired of Kim’s bullshit and their latest rocket almost hit mainland Japan. I cannot blame them for wanting more advance protection systems with ability to first-strike Kim if Kim decides to actually attack.

So they expect the government to start squeezing blood from stone then I guess.
