They have been saying that they are going to ban tourist weed smoking for like 20 years. I'm pretty sure they do this every 5 years to boost tourists trying to get in before it's too late.

I was hesitant to go to Amsterdam because of the reputation. I was pleasantly shocked to find it one of the calmest, most walkable, cities that I'd ever visited.

And dear lord, the people were SO nice!

I spent 4 hours walking around Amsterdam aimlessly at night and loved it.

Got high at a coffee shop, got drunk at the Heineken brewery, passed out on a riverbank. 10/10 would Amsterdam again.

Stag parties? Are they trying to get rid of the Milky Way (Melkweg)?

Pub crawls? City centers in holland have maps of pub crawls.

Cannabis use? You can't drink in a smoke house and can't smoke in pubs. Where is the problem?

It sounds like they might be trying to ban package tours and booze cruises where partygoers get unlimited drinks. Some other tourist spots have implemented similar restrictions. Tourists can still go on pub crawls, but they have to pay entrance fees and buy drinks individually instead of doing "all-you-can-drink" packages. Those big organized tour groups can go wild in a way that normal stag parties and pub crawlers usually don't.

Oh. Didn't think of that. Never been on a booze cruise or party bus. During my day it was just some friend or two backpacking through Europe on the Euro pass and staying at Youth Hostels and meeting some new friends at a new pub/bar/club. Different times.

Was in the Netherlands in August visiting a friend of my fiancé's family who lived in the Hague and he was constantly shitting on Amsterdam as a tourist trap and saying foreigners shouldn't go there because they can have all the same experiences in other Dutch cities but better and cheaper.

Well each city has their own unique flavor. Being born in the Netherlands i can say Amsterdam isn't simply a tourist trap, it has unique and great people. Just go slightly out of center. It's also a bit if a harder city compared to say Utrecht which has more of a student vibe. Each city is just different.

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 64%. (I'm a bot)

> In order to keep the city livable, the political leaders want to put an end to disruptive bachelor parties, organized pub crawls, limit the number of river cruises, and to force the early nightly closure of bars, cafes, restaurants, and the windows where sex workers operate in the Red Light District.

> The mayor and aldermen are also in favor of a ban on smoking cannabis in certain parts of the city center.

> Hospitality businesses would be ordered to close by 2 a.m., with the last customers allowed inside by 1 a.m. The sex workers' spaces would be required to close no later than 3 a.m..

Please don’t, despite decriminalizing shrooms and having legal weed, our population is high enough and many of our national parks are getting destroyed by the increased tourism to where we’ve had to limit some famous hiking spots.

If you come here, do it for you know…more than the drugs, and respect what was here before you?

I always tell people if you go to Amsterdam with just the idea of drugs and prostitution you will miss so much beauty and culture.

The first bit of advice I give to friends who want to go is take your time, slow down and look around.

He was talking about Colorado, but I think there’s a very good mutual point here regardless. I say let Amsterdam have more than a stoner culture, for sure!

Maybe that’s what they’re trying to say. I think Amsterdam has like a reverse stigma for being a super fun party place. Used to be because weed was legal there, but now…
