It's amazing how the guy is still in power after all the turmoil that has happened, as in literally you would have thought he was overthrown. Didn't realise he is still around and in power.

He is kept in (diminishing) power by Russia /Iran. In return he offers them freedom to operate in Syria. Otherwise would have been overthrown most likely

The Russian aviation saved him. In 2013 his troops were losing territory very quickly. Russian hardware might be shit against NATO but it was good enough against low tech opponents like Isis.

Well. He's the only side with an actual professional army...his ethnic group (Alawites) control the army and most industry and are loyal. Also he's got military backing from Russia and Iran

Without Russia and Iran his professional army would have gone down. I think both these countries have much to answer for what they have done in Syria.
