Reply to Police on 64 by rvakep

They were out in larger-than-usual numbers all the way down to Newport News this morning and again this evening. End of the month!

If you're in the city, they'll haul it away for a $50 fee. (Fee applies to appliances only. Other bulky items like furniture are removed for free.) Leave it at the curb/alley with your trash, the day of your trash pickup on the same week as your recycling collection. For an additional $100 they'll do an expedited pickup within 24 hours. Dial 311 or use RVA311.com to submit a request.

If the "no left turn" sign to the right of the signal is illuminated (visible), then left turns are currently restricted, based on time of day. It's an alternative to the signs that specifically list the days and times you can't turn left, usually during peak traffic periods.

If the "no left turn" sign is off (sign will appear blank) left turns are permitted, and are the only valid turns from that lane per the sign to the left of the signal.

tl;dr:Left sign restricts the lane to left turns only, at all times. Right sign prohibits left turns during specific times of certain days.

Unfortunately there's no banana in the picture for a size reference, but I feel like calling this fire "massive" is over-selling it a bit. Did it get bigger than the campfire we see here?

🙋‍♂️ This one does.

And yet I also agree with you 100%.

In Driver's Ed, western Hanover County circa 1995, traffic circles got about 10 seconds of instructional time. I still remember being told we'd never see one unless we went to Gordonsville or Northern Virginia.

I love them and breeze right through, but I trust nobody else who's in or near the circle. Head on a swivel, foot ready on the brake pedal.

Traffic signals have no place in a traffic circle. That's how you end up with dysfunctional clusterf*cks like the Fairfax Circle.

https://ggwash.org/view/3181/make-fairfax-circle-a-real-circle

"This circle has a series of lights, which effectively kills any chance of it being a true traffic circle. This also makes merging into the circle difficult, because given the light cycle the circle may be filled with stopped cars which often create their own lanes."

Probably not. But water heaters -- at least the traditional tank-type units -- do require regular maintenance to function properly, and we all know how most landlords are when it comes to preventive maintenance.

If it has been more than a couple years since the unit was drained/flushed of sediment buildup, that, along with other neglected servicing, are likely causing the unit to perform below its potential.

Not gonna lie, I've started ignoring the one at Huguenot High School. So many times I come through there and the school zone lights are flashing but there's absolutely no signs of life anywhere around the school. If they're boarding buses, fine, turn on the signs. If the only person left on the property is the janitor, turn the damn things off.

I think a lot of people are seeing huge rate increases lately. There was a thread in r/nova three days ago with lots of good discussion.

My Progressive policy is up for renewal in January. Two cars, full coverage, excellent driving record, excellent credit, over five years with Progressive, and several claims during that time - none our fault (cars hit while parked on the street, etc).

I'm used to rates creeping up a little bit at each renewal, but this time I'm jumping from around $600/6 months to over $940/6 months. The information they sent with the renewal tries really hard to explain the increase, but it reads like the silliest, most contradictory thing I've ever seen come out of an insurance company. Here's the gist -- If I had time to sit here and redact the personal info I'd post it -- it's a fun read.

  • I'm a 5-star VIP ultra gold something-or-another and they love having me as a customer.
  • I've had a few claims. None of them were my fault and they're not holding any of them against me. But, a few sentences later, they note that they're considering those claims when determining my rate increase anyway.
  • I have excellent credit. Outstanding. Some of the best in town. Exceeds expectations. Couldn't ask for more. FICO 840+. Several paragraphs of praise. But I had the audacity to apply for a single credit card 6 months ago. Sorry, gotta raise my rates.
  • They did a manual review and looked at a lot of stuff that they don't look at when writing a new policy. I am specifically invited to cancel the policy and come back as a new customer where I will almost surely obtain a more favorable rate which does not take as many factors into consideration - such as that credit card I had the nerve to open. (WTF - am I a Sprint customer again? Gotta leave and come back for the best deal?)

Bottom line -- they just want to raise rates but apparently need to find any justification to do so. I'll be shopping around for another insurance company myself. Progressive's handling of our last two claims was abysmal and a number of shops in town now flat-out refuse to work with Progressive customers for some reason. I can't justify a 50% rate increase for subpar service, and if I leave, it's not going to be so I can come right back at a lower rate.

You have to dig for this information since they didn't put it on the front page of their web site or on their phone message, and they haven't updated their social media in 3 years, but after clicking through to their online ordering, there's a message stating they're closed through January 2.

I quit going to movie theaters over 20 years ago for several of the same reasons you've indicated. Poor audio -- often uncomfortably loud, uncomfortable seats, high ticket prices, unruly guests, and outlandish food costs. The last time I was in a Regal cinema, was at the old Ridge Cinema in late summer of 2000. Tickets were $7.25. No way in hell I'm paying $22 for a movie ticket. I'll watch it at home, for free, where I can control the environment.
