Yeah one way you can think about it is somewhere in the ballpark of an hour of minimum wage work per week (probably less since I think minimum wages in purchasing power were stronger back then), and substantially less than that for a working professional.

On one hand I feel bad that HBO bungled his ending so badly that he probably feels like he has to make massive changes.

On the other hand, I've basically given up on him finishing before he starts slipping due to old age. At his current pace I simply do not have any confidence the last book will be very good.

Sorta, the rope needs to tighten as you pull on it to work properly, because it has to be pretty loose to get over someone's head.

There are other working knots, a slip knot will do (it's basically the same idea but simpler) just fine. But there's a reason the hangman's noose was used for so long.
