Hey!
VA guy whose been in dc since ‘90. Don’t worry. Just be your authentic self. People will be drawn to you or not.
DC is a larger city than you are used to but you can also think of DC as a collection of many smaller subgroups. You being you will naturally find one or more that you enjoy. Do what you love and meet friends that way.
Yeah, there will be scammers and complicated parking regulations and weird national protests and loud neighbors, but just take them in stride. Don’t avert your eyes and shun them. Most people respond well to being treated as people even if you don’t agree with them or pay them. :)
People talk a lot about crime and whatever else bugs them on this sub and, sure, maybe don’t walk alone with earbuds blasting tunes while drunk on a deserted street at 3am. But also don’t expect the worst from people. I’m no social genius and have managed just fine.
Be a part of it and it will become a part of you, and enjoy! Once you are here feel free to ask more specific questions. ‘Till then don’t worry too much. Over a million people successfully navigate this city every day. You will too.

Imagine getting to a point where 300 people think it’s a good use of their time to talk about you. That takes a spectacular lack of introspection.

I know this won’t fit your playlist but hands down the most widely known and enduring dc artists are Francis Scott Key and John Phillips Souza. I will go now.

As someone who was here during Clinton I can say I agree and noticed the same back then. It’s not so much that things backslide during R admins (let’s face it, they don’t hang much in DC proper or contribute to it’s culture), it’s that we get fresh new blood with new D admins.

Reply to comment by splotchypeony in Are there any stores or grocery chains that sell spices in bulk? by splotchypeony
The original out of Texas did when they opened their first store on P Street, but they’ve been bought and sold at least twice since then and they’ve greatly changed. I miss being able to go to the fish counter and buy heads and tails and trimmings - basically what they’d discard when they filet fish- for very cheap to use as a soup base.

Yes Organic has spice bins. You won’t find rare stuff like Sichuan peppercorns or really expensive stuff like saffron or nutmeg but for the basics it’s good. I get bay leaves, white peppercorns, and hibiscus flowers there.

Ok. So, the Whole chicken with fries(!) was a win with our kids. My wife who is West African also liked the chicken enough to want to know the spice. My chicken & Jollof was very good. Would order again in a heartbeat. I was particularly pleasantly surprised by the plantains. Most places don’t do them right and they come out greasy. These were perfect. I had to stop my kid from eating them. My wife ordered the Jollof and snapper. I was amazed they were able to fit a whole fish in that takeout box. They did by bending the tail over and it looked great. Here I will be a bit critical- perhaps a bit too critical. We get better fish at our home on the eastern shore. IMO it’s hard to get really great fish here in DC. It was good- good enough that she had seconds the next day- but not what we are used to. We will definitely order from here again. The chicken and rice and pepper sauce were all big wins.

Good neighborhood IMO. Georgia Ave itself needs a little help but 14th near Decatur has a great cafe ( Highlands) and you won’t lack for transportation options. (In case you didn’t know DC streets from S to N run alphabetical, and when the alphabet finishes they run alphabetical again in a series of one, two, and three syllable words. So between Web-ster and Al-li-son is the transition between the third and fourth alphabetic series :) ) The West side of Georgia is 16th Street Heights, the East side is Brightwood. Just some trivia.

No offense intended to anyone, I guess your are right. I prefer people closer to my own age. Mentoring/helping someone younger is satisfying but that’s really very different than dating/partnering. I guess what I’m trying to say is 27 is super-young and there’s a lot of good dating/partnering years ahead. At least I think so. My happiness quotient went up every year since my early 20’s! Supposedly most people’s does.

As a married guy who is literally twice your age hearing people say it’s an age thing really blows my mind. Could it be a function of the age of the people who use the app?

Echoing what others have said here. 16th street heights proper is a great neighborhood between 16th street on the West, and Georgia Ave on the East. Most say it is between Walter Reed to the North and Spring Road to the South. To give more information we’d need to know the cross street/hundred block of Georgia Ave.

So they should take one of those vacant shelter beds, right? There is a whole pathways to housing track available for the temporarily unhoused that is completely separate from the waiting list for affordable housing.

I think that a lot (not all!) of the worst drivers in dc are simply carrying the driving practices and driving expectations they learned wherever it is they learned them into this city, which is a very different driving environment and where they are fundamentally maladaptive. I can understand how they would be frustrated but really it’s on them to adjust.

Everyone just needs to take a breath and slow down- physically (the new 20mph default speed limit is great!) and emotionally. Nothing is so important as to risk carelessly injuring another. The government isn’t to blame- we are.

You appear to have some faulty assumptions about the nature and geographic distribution of gun deaths. Here: https://dcwitness.org/interactive-map/ FYI you can use this same map to geolocate vehicular deaths. If you do so you will note that they also are concentrated EOTR.

Quibble- Nationally more people die of auto accidents, but not in dc. If memory serves Dc auto deaths are around 20-30/yr, firearm deaths are about 10x that.
