Yes! All the time.

I feel this way with a lot of great action movies. I have the most hype energy during a John Wick movie towards the beginning, by the end I’m a bit more worn out.

I feel this way about most Marvel, Star Wars, and DC movies too, it’s starts out hype as fuck and you’re like wow this is gonna be the best movie ever- then the cracks slowly start to show themselves as you eventually become bored and tired with the move. I’ve still never seen the last 20 minutes of Doctor Strange 2.

Maybe if they created an original vampire show instead of remaking a classic that they’ll never be able to live up to, it wouldn’t have gotten cancelled. I actually would have watched the show if it was a new dark, creepy vampire show that’s emotional and touching like LTRRI.

By all accounts the show is seemingly not bad, so I give credit to the people involved for not making it terrible. I just think there’s nothing that needs to be remade 3 times. Why would I want to see a version of a masterpiece that’s merely ‘decent’? I’ll just watch the version that’s a classic instead...

I agree. The director Baran Bodar and his wife made a hit German movie in 2014 that was great, made a 2017 movie called ‘Sleepless’ with Jamie Fox that was TERRIBLE- and then made Dark, which is great. It would be a damn shame if Netflix decided they were a fluke after their first big Hollywood film failed and never greenlit dark!

I agree. I’m stunned by how disappointed I was in the show.

I wouldn’t say it’s the worst show I’ve ever seen and I’d give a season 2 a try, but something that really stood out to me is how poor the character development is. Eyk and Maura have no inner conflict to speak of, they don’t go through growth or have an arc of any sort. They’re just...beacons to move the plot along. I wouldn’t know how to describe their personalities or what makes them unique- Maura is stoic. Eyk is stoic, and he likes alcohol. That’s it. I dare you to name other personality traits they had.

All of the side characters are flat. I guess the Asian woman and the euro dude had some chemistry, and Jerome was alright but...that’s about all I got. There’s no dilemma with the side characters as gripping as the love triangle with Ulrich, Hannah, and Katarina in Dark Season 1. And any information we DID learn about the side characters? Doesn’t matter, apparently. It’s all a simulation, those are fake memories and not their actual backstories.

I love the writer/director team behind it and will watch anything they do, including season 2, but I really hope they make changes going forward.

The show is going to have to undergo a huge overhaul in Season 2 in terms of character development, because right now all the show is is an decent mystery with characters you barely know and don’t care about.

The two leads, Eyk and Maura, are so paper thin and have literally no type of personal arc or journey in the show whatsoever. Maura remembers more about her past, that’s it. That’s the only way they grow or change through the show. Eyk is the captain who lost his family...that’s it. We’re never given any reason to care about them other than ‘they’re the good guys’. I mean seriously, why should I root for Maura? Why should I root for Eyk? Would any of you honestly be sad if they both died at the end?

It’s insane that such poor character writing comes from the same people who did ‘Dark’, a show where every character has so many layers of good and evil to them and is constantly thrown into situations where their morals are tested. I don’t think there’s a single character plot line in this show that’s as compelling as both of the love triangles in Dark Season 1. Nor is anyone faced with a moral dilemma as interesting as the one Ulrich deals with in Season 1 involving the fate of a little boy.

I don’t think all hope is lost though, and I’ll watch season 2. But if they think they don’t need to make a conscious effort to improve the character development and give us a reason to care about the leads, the show will stay in the shadow of ‘Dark”.
