Part of the story that I left out is that I actually built a little wall using extra foil around the coals to keep them in place. This worked against sliding off the top, but I didn't account for potholes that would bounce them.

Thank you! When I saw the pickup start down the drive, I felt relief knowing the vehicle could tow my car out of the grass, but I was also scared because of the stereotype that truck drivers have in rural PA.
This happened about ten years ago, and I am over the trauma of it all. It's now just a funny story from my past.
