Around Hartford Area:

Wethersfield, Newington, Rockhill and west Hartford. All affordable and good schools. Mostly insurance/financial and healthcare jobs in capital city and surrounding area. Great ethic, racial and economic mix. Lots of old beautiful homes especially old wethersfield and west Hartford.

Glastonbury, Farmington, simsbury - more expensive, somewhat better schools, more homogeneous. - upper middle class white and Asian folk. Commute for work. More fancy.

Fairfield county - very good schools. Way more expensive. Lots of jobs…commutable to NY and places like Stamford. Very fancy.

NW Corner - lots of rural areas. Very bucolic. Long commutes. Mix of very expensive towns and affordable. Some hicks.

NE corner. Rural. Maybe unfairly, but feels like this area is a bit depressed. Rural with some small cities. Hicks abound.

A lot of great shoreline towns east of New Have.

South East CT - basically Rhodesia Island. Haha. Not very familiar with this area.

North end is the most disadvantaged part of the city. West end has a lot of very old and beautiful homes (feels more suburban in general). Downtown has a lot of newer/converted apartment buildings. South end is a mix.

If your bud has good (new all season or snow) tires and you are not heading up the mountain you will be fine.

I like the dog posts and I love my dog and cat. With that said many of your points are shared more broadly. I have a vet friend from Panama. He thinks the extent that Americans extend things like healthcare, daycare, insurance, dental care, apparel, etc. is laughable…in his case all the way to the bank. As an FYI many vets are financially rewarded by upselling unnecessary services. It’s a racket.

Blah, blah, blah. Until college is free this is a great outcome for a working class family with 5 kids that were able to attend a top university without incurring 100s of thousands of dollars in debt.

There are @ 100 min express trains (fewer stops) from new haven to grand central. My company was walking distance from grand central. Having to jump on another subway from there will also had time and headache. Took about 35 -40 minutes to drive and park in new haven from a town just south of Hartford. All in all it averaged about 2H 45m each way. Driving in is possible, but you are looking at needing to leave very very early.

I now drive to Boston one day a week from the same area and leave around 5. Arrive just before 7. DM me if want more info.
