It's not like in other countries it's better. EU has movies in public domain 70 years after last death of either director, writer and few others since it's collaboration. Which means that if someone makes something when 20 and live to 100 then that work will be only in public domain after 150 years. It's insane and only make sure that 99% will simply disappear before that.

The problem with acting is the number of potential winners. You have usually one director, one screenwriter, one composer and others for a movie and two or more leads and dozens of support making it a lot harder to get an award.

But dividing it based on whatever someone is female or male doesn't feel right. Having two award for leads and two for support with no distinction doesn't work. There is probably simply no good solution. Personally I would simply leave it as it was saying it's tradition and it's allows to double the awards instead of removing it.
