I was lucky enough to have had a good education and training to do what I love here in Washington. I’m also pretty lucky that I was able to afford a home before prices skyrocketed in an area that suddenly became a landlord/real estate investor’s paradise. I’m seeing a lot of misery in hard working folks who are being priced out of their dreams here and a lot of callousness from the folks who “got theirs.” I love it, but it’s breaking my heart. But that’s not just Washington, tbh. EDIT: The beauty of our state is beyond measure. Get out and experience it.

If you make 70K, you probably take home $4400. What are you comfortable paying per month? Personally, I’d go no higher than 40% of gross monthly which would be $1800. You can afford a 400K home with an $1800/mo mortgage with an 170K downpayment. That buys a decent home where I live in rural Western Washington. Or wait for the fall of capitalism and parasitic commodification of housing!

The entire cc system in WA is fantastic. Best value for your 2 year education imo. Depends on where you end up living though. Do you want to live in Seattle? Central or North Seattle are great. Out in the burbs? Shoreline or Edmonds are good. Wayyyyy up in Skagit or Bham? Skagit Valley or Whatcom. Good luck!

I just did this last week. It was bad conditions when I got home Wednesday, but it’s doable! It takes 21 hours from LA to Seattle and that’s if you stop just for gas and bio breaks. I say do it now because it’s warming up, but you better go quick before the atmospheric river system comes in. Leaving Tuesday arriving Wednesday would be best.
