The fingers were symbolic of his ministry as Bishop and Priest. Beyond that, regarding motivation for the trial, that particular pope was gravely mentally ill.

Truthfully it is rarely made in toilets any longer since toilets in most correctional facilities have no tanks for hiding the garbage bag full of fruit liquor. Toilets on the other hand are often used as a cooking basin with a device called a stinger. Often inmates will exclusively defecate in an alternate toilet from their cell in order to keep their toilet clean for cooking.

Pope Stephen VI
